General Statement of Duties

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is currently seeking interested candidates for the position of Telecommunicator. The successful candidate would be a highly motivated individual who can communicate effectively and multi-task and who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to remain calm under pressure. Duties include operating an enhanced 911 emergency system in receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for the SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

Distinguishing Features

An employee in this class is responsible for operating an enhanced 911 emergency system involving a network of complex equipment. Positions are involved in receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. Duties include dispatching appropriate law enforcement personnel and equipment. Duties also include providing pre-arrival instructions to callers. Judgment is required in making decisions during emergencies. This employee must respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations and be proficient at multi-tasking. Work is performed in a confined space under general supervision and is evaluated through conferences and review of operations.
This position currently works a 12-hour day or night fixed shift (approximately 7a - 7p or 7p - 7a) including weekends and holidays, with varying days off during the week and every other weekend. Mandatory on-call rotation after completion of training phase. **New hires are assigned where needed, shift choice is not guaranteed**

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED and one year experience in emergency services communications or graduation from high school or GED and two years experience in a related public safety field. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. Applicants selected for hire must meet minimum standards set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Standards and Training Division and undergo an extensive backgrounds process including but not limited to, Criminal background check, Polygraph Examination, and Medical/Psychological/Drug screening conducted by a licensed Physician. Candidate must also successfully complete Basic Telecommunicator School within one (1) year of hire.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Answers calls requesting emergency assistance; asks callers appropriate questions in determining proper response needed; verifies and obtains all needed information in order to correctly dispatch the call.
Dispatches law enforcement personnel and equipment; monitors frequency for any additional assistance.
Responds promptly to all mutual aid requests from adjoining counties; monitors calls from a large number of state and local units transmitting messages; Operates a wide range of very complex equipment in performing the functions of the position; maintains auxiliary equipment as required.
Must type quickly and accurately on computer keyboard;
Must have good customer service skills;
Completes all associated paperwork accurately.
Performs related duties as assigned.
