SUMMARY:
Primary responsibilities associated with this position include all telecom service and work orders for faculty, staff and students. This person installs and replaces phones, headsets, etc. as well as troubleshoots basic telephony problems. Cable installation to accommodate personnel moves/adds/changes. Project management for projects involving telecom services is also a large part of this position including the management of sub-contractors when they are needed. This person performs the basic telephone switch administration, when necessary, for new telephone sets.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior Technician is the primary person responsible for telephony service and work orders for faculty, staff, and students. Responsibilities are varied, and include:
Problem solving and handling moves ands and changes
- Installation of cabling and phone sets for moves/add/changes
- Maintain inventory of spare phones, headsets, etc for service needs
- Maintaining/updating infrastructure documentation.
- Problem troubleshooting/resolution of analog, digital and VOIP telephone sets
- Service and support for cable television HFC network - troubleshooting problems, direct support to end users as required
- Management of sub contract labor as appropriate
- Set-up and testing of audioconferencing systems for scheduled meetings
- Supports the service in the University owned houses which involves working with vendors to correct issues or installations
- Tracking/documenting service work using University work-order system
Project management
- Infrastructure (cable plant) design, installation and documentation related to renovations and moves/add/changes
- Develop estimates
- Management of sub-contractor
- Coordination of move-related tasks with other departments (University Facilities and University Help Desk)
- Tracking project progress in University Project Management system
- Track project costs
Phone System Administration
- Basic sys-admin support (programming new extensions, voicemail boxes, etc.)
- Works with the Sr. Engineer and telephone system vendor for resolution of telephone system alarms and maintenance tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position requires significant physical effort. This person will be required to pull cables in many different environments, working on ladders and lifts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong technical and troubleshooting skills
- Familiar with copper and IP-based telephony
- Familiar with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel)
- Basic networking skills
- Must be able to multi-task; work on multiple projects with different dead-lines
- Must be able to work independently - Self motivated
- Strong inter-personal skills are a must
- Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs.
- Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School and related trade school
- B/S or B/A preferred
- 6+ recent years with telephony experience in a PBX environment
- 6+ years copper/fiber infrastructure installation, termination and testing
- Avaya PBX experience a plus but not required
WORK HOURS:
- Full-time, non-exempt position
- Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; 8 hrs./day; 40 hrs./week
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $26.16 to $34.66 per hour)
