Overview
The Communications & Marketing Department is responsible for advancing the Library’s mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities, both external and internal. Leveraging both print and digital platforms and channels, the Department positions the Library as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.
The Senior Manager of Public Relations works with the Director of Media Relations to lead and implement the press and Public Relations strategy for The New York Public Library. This position involves leading media strategy on the highest-visibility press launches, including system-wide initiatives and campaigns, education programs, and major NYPL announcements. Additionally, the Senior Manager takes the lead role in handling and managing incoming press requests in a busy, fast-paced environment. Candidates with experience in rapid-response and crisis communications are preferred. The Library receives a wide range of media requests – from its funding in the city budget to its world-renowned research collections. We are looking for a seasoned generalist with the curiosity and skill to see and amplify the many stories it holds.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own :
Strategy for media relations
Project management for press events (rallies, branch openings, press conferences, etc)
Public relations and information, including patron emails and responding to public inquiries
Teach :
- Best practices for garnering press stories
Learn:
- All about NYPL’s 92 sites and the diverse communities they serve in order to promote them
Improve :
- Department processes and media lists, cross-functional communications
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month , this person will:
- Familiarize themselves with the workings of the Library and the Communications Department
3 months , this person will:
- Manage press for upcoming Library events, campaigns, launches that are part of their portfolio
6 months and beyond , this person will:
- Lead media strategy on the highest-visibility press launches, including system-wide initiatives and campaigns, education programs, and major NYPL announcements
Responsibilities
Works closely with the Director of Media Relations to develop overall press strategy for the Library, including system-wide campaigns and Library priorities
Develops, plans, and manages press events to secure media
Represents Media Relations in internal and external meetings as an expert who can provide guidance on these matters
Maintains relationships with key media
Writes media advisories, talking points, press releases, project briefs, communications plans, and backgrounders as needed for interviews, events, and campaigns
Draft public communication around important branch events for patrons and to press
Develops and executes media partnerships strategies for the Library, including identifying who would make key Library partners
Maintains relationships with key partners and potential partners
Works within the Department and the Library as a whole to facilitate partnerships
Perform other related duties as necessary
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, or an additional three years of relevant work experience
Required Experience
6+ years of relevant experience working with media
Experience with rapid response, crisis comms, and responding to public questions preferred
Required Skills
