The Security / Maintenance Associate provides a valuable resource of information and service for patients, visitors and the staff at the hospital. At all times the generalist must display a professional, helpful, and positive attitude when dealing with all internal and external customers. In addition, the generalist is responsible to perform general maintenance and security duties, respond to all security alerts, fires, and disasters (i.e.; Disasters Levels I, II, III, and IV, etc.). The core responsibility is to protect staff, visitors, patients, and property according to policy and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
Patrols hospital property to ensure the safety for patients, visitors, employees, etc.
Handles and monitors patients that exhibit violent behavior.
Investigates security related incidents and documents findings on an incident report.
Documents and maintains a daily report of activities.
Locks and unlocks various buildings around the hospital campus.
Responsible for being part of the fire and disaster response teams.
Enforces the hospital parking policy.
Display a caring and professional attitude when greeting all customers at all times
Demonstrates competence, as a member of the security alert team, in responding to agitation/ violent behavior of an individual requiring verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint.
Performs hazardous patient decontamination procedures. Identifies hazards, selects proper personal protective equipment (including respiratory protection) sets up appropriate decontamination systems, removes contaminated clothing from patients, and contains contaminated wastes for proper disposal.
Works independently, in a safe and appropriate manner. Demonstrates both problem-solving/problem prevention skills equal to the expected level of responsibility to their jobs.
Be able to install, repair, and maintain various parts and components of equipment within the facilities.
Perform preventative maintenance checks / inspections on all equipment as required.
Have knowledge of general commercial building maintenance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Attends and participates in all hospital/ departmental required in-services, security department meetings, and IAHSS Certification
Represent the hospital/ department professionally and consistently
Help promote and maintain a safe environment (i.e.; shovel snow/ spread de-icer)
Assists the Facilities Director as needed
Other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching and standing. Must be able to walk up to ½ mile to job assignments and run to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner. Must frequently talk to employees and non-employees about work related issues. Occasionally must sit, crawl, push objects of various weight and material, balance body, finger and grasp. Must be able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 100 pounds while weight of item is stationary or moving. Must be able to hear as it relates alarms, verbal orders, etc. Must be able to see as it relates to use of equipment, tools, prints and diagrams. Must be able to smell and as it relates to possible maintenance problems. Must be able to feel as it relates to equipment, tools and determining problems. Must be able to work alone and/or with others. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to withstand varied temperature changes as it relates to weather and work area conditions. Must be able to feel vibrations as it relates to possible maintenance problems.
POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
Assault and battery - risk minimized by self defense training.
Punctures and lacerations of the skin - risk minimized by awareness and observations.
Exposure to blood and body fluids - risk minimized by universal precautions.
Exposure to extreme cold temperatures, below 32 degrees for periods of up to three (3) hours at a time.
Operating machinery, slippery surfaces, and, electrical in making rounds through the hospital. Risk minimized by universal precautions and adherence to O.S.H.A. and M.S.D.S. standards
Extreme cold: Security Officer must provide their own winter clothing accessories, boots, gloves, hats, etc.
Slippery surfaces; wear appropriate footwear.
Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patient with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Receive supervision from the Director of Facilities, the Security Manager and/or Coordinator. Be able to work independently and as a team member and prioritize tasks and complete them efficiently and professionally.
SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):
Supervised by the Director of Facilities
Must possess the ability to proceed on his/her own initiative in compliance with policies, practices and procedures prescribed by the immediate manager
COMMUNICATIONS:
Must be able to communicate well with all levels of hospital personnel, visitors, patients, and physicians. Also, individual must possess good writing skills.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license while employed in current position.
