Position Title: Seasonal Junior Botanist & Plant Investigator Program Assistant
Department: Children’s Education
Reports to: Project Green Reach Co-coordinators
FLSA Status: Part-time Seasonal, Nonexempt
Compensation: $16 per hour
Term: June 13–August 13, 2023
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday; 22–35 hours per week
Position Description:
Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) Junior Botanists (new participants entering grades 5–7) and Plant Investigators (returning participants entering grades 6–8) are scholarship students selected from Title I schools in Brooklyn that have partnered with BBG during the school year through our Project Green Reach outreach program. This position entails three weeks of intensive training, followed by six weeks of fast-paced programming.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate and work within an inquiry-based, team-teaching model for gardening activities.
- Support Plant Investigator instructor in preparing and delivering lessons that are multidisciplinary and exploratory, with a focus on botanical/environmental science.
- Plan and lead weekly cooking session.
- Help maintain garden plots.
- Work as part of staff team to co-lead a three-day overnight camping trip.
- Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Schedule:
Mandatory paid training: Tuesday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., June 13–30
Program: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m., July 5–August 13
*Requires two Saturdays (June 24 and August 13) and one 3-day, 2-night camping trip (July 17–19)
Qualifications:
- College-level studies and a demonstrated interest in education, urban agriculture, botany, or environmental and biological sciences
- Must be a former member in good standing of the Garden Apprentice Program
- Must love teaching children ages 9–13
- Experience and comfort working with students, peers, and supervisors from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to work outside in all weather
