Job Title: Seasonal Grounds Gardener

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: Seasonal March-September

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Horticulture Grounds Supervisor and direct supervision of the Horticulture Grounds Lead, this seasonal position will be primarily be responsible for landscape & garden maintenance as directed within the Zoo grounds.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

• Weed Management:
• Weekly watering of non-irrigated areas and fertilization as directed.
• Planting perennials, grasses, and trees in the landscape.
• Mulching existing or new planting areas.
• Flexible schedule to avoid disruption of the guest experience.
• Provide labor in support of other areas of the Horticulture department.
• Work and act in a professional manner.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience in commercial landscape management, helpful
• Valid driver's license is required.
• Familiar with common pest, disease and weed identification.
• General knowledge of common trees species, shrubs and perennials.
• Knowledge of proper Horticulture industry methods regarding planting height, pruning and watering.

• Strong work ethic, self-motivated and able to multi-task in a fast-paced work team environment or in individually.

Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid driver's license with a good history.

Working Conditions & Physical Efforts:

• This position may require flexible hours and some split shifts to accommodate our park setting providing minimal disruption to our guests. Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.

• Work is normally performed under various outdoor environments and weather conditions.
• Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
• Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
• Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
