Job description

Overview

As a Scenario Desk Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in the origination process by assessing and evaluating complex mortgage scenarios submitted by internal and external sales. You will be responsible for reviewing loan scenarios and assessing their eligibility based on established guidelines and risk assessment criteria. Your expertise will ensure that loans are structured appropriately by the originator at time of application submission, which contributes to the overall success of the lending process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

· Evaluate Mortgage Scenarios: Review potential loan submissions submitted by loan officers or mortgage brokers to assess whether loan can be structured to meet established guidelines

· Assess whether loan can be structured in a different manner than originally anticipated to comply with guidelines and risk criteria

· In situations where scenarios are not provided with the necessary level of information needed to analyze and arrive at a conclusion, communicate with the salesperson to collect additional details required to make a fully evaluated recommendation on next steps

· Communicate an initial “needs list” of documents required to be provided with a full loan submission

· For consumer loans, analyze loan scenario to determine viable “take out” loan options, as applicable

· Determine Eligibility: Apply underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards to determine the eligibility of applicants for mortgage loans.

· Identify Risk Factors: Identify and evaluate potential risk factors associated with mortgage applications, such as high debt-to-income ratios, low credit scores, or insufficient collateral.

· Communicate with Stakeholders: Collaborate with loan officers, mortgage brokers, borrowers, and other stakeholders to gather additional information, clarify requirements, and resolve any issues or discrepancies.

· Ensure Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures, throughout the review process.

· Maintain Documentation: Maintain accurate and organized documentation of loan scenario details, including email correspondence, and other relevant information.

· Stay Updated: Stay informed about changes in mortgage industry regulations, underwriting guidelines, and market trends to ensure accurate and effective decision-making.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

In supporting the accomplishment of company and departmental goals, it is the employee's responsibility to do all that is necessary to provide quality service to customers and fellow employees while furthering the positive image and interests of The Legacy Group. It is also the employee's responsibility to continually strive to maximize personal growth.

Requirements:

· Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, related field or commensurate work experience.

· Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, preferably in a Scenario Desk or similar role.

· Strong understanding of mortgage underwriting principles, guidelines, and regulations.

· Proficiency in analyzing financial documents and conducting risk assessments.

· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and effectively.

· Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

· Proficiency in using underwriting software (Encompass) and mortgage industry tools.
