Safety Certification Instructor, Downtown Ymca Family Center

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Safety Certification Instructor may teach all certification courses based on their Instructor level certification using the guidelines provided and required by that certifying organization. These courses could include but are not limited to Basic Life Support, Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Lifeguarding, Swim Lesson Instructor, and/or Basic Water Rescue.

Job Responsibilities

1. Conduct courses in compliance with accreditation Red Cross or Y USA's training designs and course/skill work as required as well as all YMCA of Central Florida policies and procedures
2. Responsible for providing a quality-learning environment for all participants
3. Ensure classroom space and required equipment per certifying organization guidelines are available and in good working order for each class
4. Work with the Aquatics/Program Director in securing proper class rosters prior to the start of class. Follow class ratios per certifying organization's guidelines
5. Work with the Aquatics/Program Director to submit and store all required paperwork upon completion of courses in accordance with the YMCA of Central Florida's centralized aquatics training policies and certifying organization's guidelines within defined time period.
6. Ensure all YMCA of Central Florida's program standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention
7. Ensure all program aquatics staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management / HR procedures
8. Schedule associates and volunteers in accordance to safety and program needs and ensures all safety and program ratios are followed
9. Monitor programming to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health & safety regulations
10. Report all accidents/incidents to your supervisor and follow the Association's current employee and member injury reporting procedures
11. All other duties as assigned by management

1. Must be at least 18 years of age
2. Must possess a high school diploma
3. Experience with CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen courses preferred.
4. Must have current and maintain certifications in CPR/AED (in compliance with certification), First Aid, and Oxygen Administration
5. Must have current and maintain Instructor certification based on American Red Cross Lifeguard or BLS Instructor or Y USA Swim Lesson or Lifeguard Instructor certification accepted.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

1. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays as needed.
2. Must be willing to work an on-call schedule rotation as required.
3. Must be willing to travel within Central Florida. Must have a valid Driver license. The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles.
4. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
5. Required to work outdoors for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme outdoor weather conditions and temperatures and to wet and/or humid conditions in swimming pool areas.
6. Must possess auditory, verbal and visual capabilities in order to adequately communicate via phone and in person. Talking is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, with or without correction.
7. Must possess the physical ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a professional water rescue.
8. Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals (i.e. pool chemicals, cleaning solutions, disinfectants, etc.).
9. Must possess the physical ability to pass a lifeguard water test and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a professional water rescue.
10. Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind. Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and members' well-being.
11. May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time while demonstrating manual dexterity in order to accurately work on the phone, computer keyboard, and other equipment.
