The Risk and Control Specialist is responsible for 2nd line identification and aggregation of Northern Trust’s key risks and Controls. This role will work closely with the 2nd line executive leadership team, including the Chief Risk Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Head of Risk Strategy, Head of Financial Risk, and Head of Non-Financial Risk, etc. This role will also work closely with the 1st line leadership teams, particularly coordinating with Business Unit Chief Control Officers, to coordinate Risk and Control identification, awareness, and inventorying across the organization.

Key responsibilities include coordinating with the 2nd line executive leadership team to challenge and enhance the risk inventory and Control library across risk categories and business units. Importantly, this role is also responsible for embedding awareness, ongoing maintenance, and aggregation of controls throughout the organization.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of managing Risk and Control identification at large financial institutions, as well as coordinating with senior stakeholders across the organization.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Drive 2nd line efforts to enhance Risk and Control identification and aggregation, as part of an enterprise-wide Risk and Control enhancement program
  • Provide strategic guidance to drive enhancement of the Risk and Control inventory and aggregation as reported within the enterprise risk profile, coordinating with technology, data, and analytics to drive automation where appropriate
  • Develop an approach to regularly refresh and challenge Risk and Control identification, as well as an approach to perform periodic deep dives on tail risks
  • Partner with testing functions to ensure control effectiveness ratings are aligned with testing outcomes
  • Lead discussions at risk oversight committees, driving focused materials and points of risk discussions
  • Serve as a liaison with regulators and auditors to support examinations, as well as continuous monitoring efforts

The successful candidate will benefit from having:

  • Proven experience identifying and inventorying risks and Controls at a financial services organization, preferably a GSIB
  • Experience with financial and non-financial risk identification and reporting and associated regulatory rules
  • Proven capability in high-quality execution, including independently as well as moving cross-functional stakeholders to act
  • Strong analytical skills (e.g., financial analysis, budgeting, and strategic planning)
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and written with all audiences, including senior leaders, in a structured manner, including on high-sensitivity topics
  • Proven experience managing delivery of critical changes in complex environment
  • Ability to establish trust-based relationships with stakeholders across enterprise, including experience effectively reviewing and challenging and raising awareness of key stakeholders
  • Knowledge of custody business is preferred
  • 5+ years of direct risk management identification experience is preferred
  • BS/CA diploma in management or finance; An MBA or similar advanced degree is preferred
  • Consulting experience is preferred
