Position Summary
Reporting to the director of Technical Services, this position is responsible for the efficient and productive operation of the Law Library's Technical Services Department. The Resource Description and Technical Services Librarian leads the Law Library in the application of technological advancements in providing access to digital and print collections, and ensuring the consistency and accuracy of all records. The position will also order, receive, catalog, and process books, government documents, and other materials for the library collection.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Cataloging and Creating Metadata
  • Produces original and complex cataloging of library materials in all formats as necessary.
  • Manages and oversees copy cataloging and batch record loads.
  • Resolves all issues related to theory and principles of cataloging.
  • Resolves all issues of record integrity related to the library management system.
  • Records periodical holdings on OCLC's Local Holding Records.
  • Catalogs and organizes rare books and archival materials in the Rare Book Room.
  • Provides access to and supervision of patron use of rare books and archival materials.

Operations
  • Assists in management of Department: produce statistical reports related to acquisitions, cataloging, metadata creation, and serials; maintain procedures manuals for ordering, cataloging, and serial processing functions; assists with interdepartmental planning; and serve as liaison to other departments in the Law Library and the University Libraries.
  • Assesses new developments in automation as it relates to cataloging.

Acquisitions
  • Orders, receives, and processes materials for faculty and the library.

Professional Development
  • Participates in professional development and service activities.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in the field, attend meetings and conferences.
  • Serves on local, regional, or national committees.
  • Obtains or retains a membership in the American Association of Law Libraries and in one or more of its Special Interest Sections.

Supervision
  • Trains and supervises student workers for the Technical Services Department.

Government Documents and Serials
  • Responsible for the processing of federal depository and paper serial subscriptions; routing of serials and claiming missing items.

Other Duties
  • Assists in interdepartmental planning activities.
  • Assists with the process of interviewing and hiring professional staff for the Law Library.
  • Attends law staff, law faculty and main University Libraries' staff meetings and workshops.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Information Science (MIS), Master of Science in Library Science (MS) or related field from A.L.A. accredited library school with two years of relevant experience.
  • Experience using: MARC21, DCRM(b), and RDA; and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, Classification, Subject Headings and Law Classification Schedules.
  • Experience with a library management system.
  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems and software programs, including OCLC cataloging utilities, Integrated Library System software, and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Working knowledge of cataloging administrative practices and techniques and Metadata concepts.
  • Willingness to learn to catalog in at least one foreign language.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively express ideas, policies, and plans verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn and use new technologies.

Required Qualifications
  • Accredited MLS/MLIS or graduate degree in subject area/discipline.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Salary Range
$57,300.00 - $97,700.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
