The Boston office of SmithGroup is looking for a Renewable Energy Specialist to join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Provide conceptual and detailed designs for renewable energy systems in the commercial and industrial market including solar photovoltaics (PV), microgrids and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Prepare solar and battery analysis in HelioScope, PVsyst, HOMER, SAM or other applicable software programs.
  • Prepare solar and battery layouts in Revit or AutoCAD with the ability to learn Revit.
  • Assist completion of utility interconnection applications when required for new installations.
  • Complete due diligence tasks including reviewing engineering design and drawings prepared by others, perform energy yield assessments, performance microgrid and battery feasibility analysis, and provide other documents and studies as required for the integration of renewable energy systems.
  • Ensure Code compliance to design, calculate and select PV and BESS equipment and products.
  • Support field investigation activities including site assessments, field measurements, and data collection.
  • Review Requests for Information (RFI), construction observation, and other construction/client coordination and support for renewable energy systems
  • Write ECM (Energy Conservation Measure) descriptions for renewable energy systems to be included in proposal submissions, and present proposals to clients at oral interviews when required.
  • Ensure a quality product, obtain QA/QC reviews, and follow all quality procedures.


An ideal candidate has:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related energy/engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working on renewable or traditional building scale energy projects.
  • EIT with ability to obtain PE preferred.
  • NABCEP certification a plus.
  • Experience modeling solar and battery performance with Helioscope, PVSyst, HOMER, SAM or other similar modeling software programs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Knowledge of related building codes including the National Electrical Code.
  • Strong creative problem-solving ability, verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to prepare detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures for clients, project managers and engineering staff.
