Brief Summary of Organization
QUNO New York works in close partnership with UN diplomats and officials to increase the global commitment to the UN's role in building lasting peace. We believe that the UN will only fulfill this aspect of its mandate when its peace initiatives truly respond to community needs, and we seek to build bridges between the UN in New York and voices from the ground.
QUNO staff members facilitate dialogue among UN stakeholders, help bring new ideas and perspectives from the ground to the international policy agenda, offer expert input into UN processes and represent the insights and concerns of Quakers at the UN.
QUNO consists of two offices, one in New York and one in Geneva, providing a joint Quaker witness and Quaker presence at the United Nations. The QUNO New York office is set up as a partnership between the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), acting together as trustees of the Quaker witness and the Quaker presence at the United Nations in New York. The Quaker UN Committee (QUNC) for New York is responsible for approving a QUNO strategic plan, setting program priorities, reviewing proposed program entry points, and ensuring that QUNO program activities are monitored. QUNC also reviews the QUNO budget before it is submitted to the AFSC Board for final approval. The QUNO New York office is legally and administratively part of the AFSC, based in Philadelphia. At present, the QUNO New York office is uses a hybrid model of work.
Summary of Principal Responsibilities
In a manner consistent with the values and mission of QUNO and AFSC, the QUNO Communications Coordinator supports engagement and growth of audience and donors as part of comprehensive efforts to build more sustainable funding for QUNO's essential work at the UN.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the QUNO Communications Coordinator include the following:
Communications & Marketing
  1. Work with the QUNO Director to develop and maintain a communications and marketing strategy for QUNO New York, in collaboration with QUNO Geneva and the AFSC Advancement Unit.
  2. With support of the Office Coordinator, lead and oversee communications efforts within the QUNO New York office with a focus on updates to the website and social media, e-newsletters, the annual review, and production of print materials.
  3. With support of the Office Coordinator, lead and oversee digital and print marketing appeals.
  4. Ensure that all public communications originating from staff and volunteers, including web and social media content, are accurate and in accordance with QUNO, AFSC, and FWCC policies and procedures (where applicable).
  5. Liaise with the AFSC Communications Department and represent QUNO communications on the AFSC editorial calendar, including coordinating schedules and outreach plans.
  6. Copy edit and proofread a variety of communications and marketing materials, including copy for the website and social media, fundraising appeals, and print publications. Draft copy when assigned.
  7. Work with QUNO Geneva communications staff to oversee the redesign and building of the new QUNO.org website.

Fundraising
  1. Support the Director to create an engagement and retention plan for QUNO supporters.
  2. Work with the Director and AFSC major gift team to ensure quality individual donor stewardship.
  3. Oversee QUNO's donor file in EveryAction and Salesforce, coordinating with AFSC's Advancement team.
  4. Work with the Director and AFSC Advancement staff to organize events at Quaker House for donors and other stakeholders.

Outreach
  1. Work with the Director and AFSC's Office of Quaker Engagement to strengthen outreach to Quaker Meetings in the US (hosting Meeting for Worship at Quaker House, linking with NYC-area monthly meetings, attending Yearly Meetings) and internationally.
  2. Support Director around outreach through Quaker Schools and hosting student visits to Quaker House.
  3. Explore establishing more robust outreach to QUNO alumni, including former QUNO staff and QUNC members.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: B.A. in journalism, public relations, or another communications field or equivalent experience. You will be the right person for the job if you are able to demonstrate:
  1. Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects at once, maintain priorities, manage time well, and balance long and short-term needs.
  2. Attention to detail and ability to carry out careful planning and follow-up.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with team members, ask clarifying questions, document agreements, and facilitate group processes.
  4. Proven writing and editing skills.
  5. At least five years of experience with a broad array of nonprofit communications, such as web pages, blogs, social media, email, video, audio, ads, and magazines.

Other Required Skills and Abilities:
  1. Ability to communicate professionally and persuasively verbally and in writing. Ease in initiating contact with persons not known, primarily by phone and email. Demonstrated ability to interpret the programs and goals of an organization to a wide range of audiences.
  2. Ability to shift roles depending on the project.
  3. Proven sensitivity to the communications styles of staff, volunteers, donors, and program constituents from a variety of nationalities, ethnicities, and traditions.
  4. Ability to work both independently and in a multi-layered team environment and to work cooperatively in an organization characterized by a high level of consultation.
  5. Ability to work with others to clarify objectives, determine priorities, and support a successful team approach to achieve goals.
  6. Computer literacy required; experience with SharePoint, Basecamp, web platforms, and constituent relationship management software is desirable.
  7. Available to attend occasional evening and weekend meetings, and very occasional travel as required by position.
  8. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies, including the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee, which emphasize non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.

Compensation: Salary - Administrative Associate I ($50,000 - $72,747) - Exempt - Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker's compensation and social security.
