Job Summary
Carnegie Corporation of New York has an exciting opportunity for an individual who understands the landscape of higher education in Africa and thrives in a team-oriented, collaborative office environment.
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is proactive, has high initiative, and is creative, energetic, well organized, and able to multi-task, prioritize, and learn quickly. The individual must have job experience within or relevant to the program area. The individual must also have exposure working in the field of African higher education and/or socio-economic development including health, agriculture, or climate change in Africa. The Program Analyst will provide both programmatic and project support to the Director of Higher Education and Research in Africa program.
Responsibilities:
- With the Director, co-develop, understand thoroughly, and implement, through grantmaking and other activities, the Higher Education and Research in Africa portfolio’s goals and supporting objectives.
- Manage grants by monitoring progress, providing assistance, making effective use of grants management software, maintaining relationships with grantees, working with grantees to solve problems, and staying abreast of developments within the grantee organization (e.g. change in leadership, fiscal considerations).
- For the investigative phase of the grantmaking process, to conduct background research on prospective grantees and their capabilities, including on-site visits; to review and assess active proposals for consideration and to solicit proposal reviews from qualified scholars and experts when appropriate.
- For the docket phase of the grantmaking process, review, assess, and act on new proposals, actively assisting in improving their quality. Review proposed budgets, staffing, workplans, and anticipated project outcomes as related to proposal goals and institutional capability; compose and submit confidential staff evaluations of projects to the board; review and approve all relevant information corroborating the recommendation that is included in the docket.
- Prepare supporting materials for presentations and present grant dockets as required.
- Review and approve grantee requests for grant modification, prepare closeout reports, and ensure that terms and conditions of grants are met.
- Collaborate with the Program Director on strategy and initiatives for the Higher Education and Research in Africa portfolio, including the design and implementation of activities to advance the strategy.
- Sustain an accurate working knowledge of the current trends, professional practices, and developing policy issues pertinent to the program area.
- Represent the Corporation to grantees, attend meetings, and prepare meeting summaries.
- Monitor active projects, and assist with active projects as needed, including appropriate assessments of active projects.
- Draft correspondence and other miscellaneous duties as required.
- Represent the Corporation on field-facing panel discussions and webinars and at funder and industry meetings and events.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Undergraduate degree required, advanced degree preferred
- Strong presentation and listening skills
- Excellent writing ability
- Very good planning and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Willingness to travel (domestic and international)
- Savvy user of technology
- At least three years’ experience working on preparing grant portfolios. Subject matter expertise and understanding of issues affecting progress in program areas.
Salary Range
$78,000 - $88,000/year
