Postdoctoral Scientist

The Heavy Element Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group in the Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks an outstanding Postdoctoral Scientist to conduct research exploring the nuclear and chemical properties of the heaviest elements.

This position will lead the effort to design, develop, characterize, and commission a new low-energy, position-sensitive focal plane detector for the FIONA mass analyzer and will perform the first scientific experiments with the new detector. The aim of these experiments will be to search for unique decay modes, such as electron capture, in superheavy elements.

What You Will Do:

• Design a position-sensitive, low-energy (<5 keV) detector for the FIONA mass separator.
• Develop, characterize, and commission a new detector for the FIONA mass separator.
• Perform first scientific experiments with new detector, aiming at determining implantation time and looking for electron capture decay modes in superheavy elements.
• Maintain and conduct research with Berkeley Gas-filled separator (BGS) and FIONA mass analyzer at LBNL.
• Participate in BGS/FIONA heavy element experiments at the 88-Inch Cyclotron.
• Develop data analysis tools and algorithms; perform analysis of experimental data heavy element experiments.

What is Required:

• Ph.D in Nuclear Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or related discipline within the last five years.
• Demonstrated experience with detectors and detection systems.
• A demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.
• Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated skills in computer programming for data acquisition, data analysis, Monte Carlo simulations and ion optics.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636 - $6,257 and is expected to start at $5,954 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Notes:

• This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
