Apply Now Job Summary The Police Officer is to protect life and property, to deter criminal activity, and to enforce all Town statutes, ordinances, and the laws and regulations of the state.

Incumbents in this class may be assigned to perform special assignments, such as field training officer, drug investigations, school resource, internet crimes investigations, K-9 unit, crime prevention or other special assignment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (both traffic and criminal) in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security Patrols designated area via motor vehicle, bicycle or on foot, to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects doors, windows, and premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to ensure security or to detect suspicious conditions; responds to active alarms at residencies, businesses, and industries; maintains high visibility in the community Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, abuse, assaults, burglaries, thefts, fatalities, traffic accidents, property damage, alarms, bomb threats, lost or missing persons searches, rescue operations, unattended deaths, public service duties, stranded motorists, or dangerous drivers Prevents/discovers commission of crime; writes citations; pursues fleeing suspects; apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders as appropriate; assists in booking inmates into jail; transports arrestees, prisoners, members of the general public, or other individuals as required Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gather information and evidence; secures crime scenes; prepares investigative reports and sketches; participates in court activities; testifies in judicial proceedings Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, which may include lifting, dragging, or carrying people away from dangerous situations, securing/evacuating people from particular areas, administering medical aid, or extinguishing small fires Provides assistance and backup support to other officers as necessary; provides emergency response on a twenty-four hour basis as needed; provides assistance to other law enforcement or public service agencies as appropriate Establishes road blocks; administers roadside field sobriety tests; writes citations; identifies wanted persons/vehicles; impounds vehicles; assists stranded motorists; ensures roadways are clear of obstacles and hazards Performs other duties including monitoring and responding to calls for assistance, investigating accidents and reported crimes, interviewing citizens, conducting searches, pursuing fleeing and subduing suspects, effecting arrests, and processing and transporting prisoners Communicates with command/supervisory personnel during emergency response and critical incidents Inspects and maintains and operates assigned police vehicle, uniform, and equipment Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, in adverse weather conditions, and in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits Participates in court activities; prepares cases for prosecution; reviews and maintains reports; meets with attorneys to discuss prosecution of cases; testifies in judicial proceedings as needed Performs research functions as needed; researches criminal histories and locations of individuals via computer Responds to questions and complaints related to law enforcement issues and activities; mediates disputes; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public; provides education and information to the public on laws, law enforcement, crime prevention, drug abuse, and related issues Maintains records, logs, and files of work activities; maintains current manuals, policies/procedures, bulletins, map books, and other materials for reference and/or review Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, checklists, accident reports, incident reports, supplemental reports, complaint forms, DUI reports, property/evidence sheets, citations, suspension notices, impound forms, accident information sheets, diagrams, warrant applications, booking sheets, bail/bond forms, or other documents Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, evidence sheets, witness statements, criminal history reports, warrants, subpoenas, summonses, court dockets, templates, diagrams, hit-and-run reports, laws and codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, maps, bulletins, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes proofreads, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; responds to requests for service or assistance; communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications Communicates with supervisors, officers, employees, other departments, dispatchers, law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, emergency/medical personnel, court officials, attorneys, victims, complainants, witnesses, prisoners, suspects, the media, the public, outside agencies and other individuals as needed to obtain information, coordinate activities, reviews status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems Cooperates with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within Town jurisdiction Attends shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and Town operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations Operates a variety of standard and specialized machinery, equipment, and tools associated with law enforcement, which may include a police vehicle, standard/emergency vehicles, firearms, chemical weapons, emergency equipment, radio/communications equipment, alcohol testing equipment, drug testing kits, processing kits, handcuffs, baton, flashlight, metal detector, measuring devices, camera, video camera, lighting equipment, measuring devices, digital audio recorder, television, or other devices Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software Assignment to Field Training may include the following additional duties: Provides on the job mentoring and training to less experienced officers; provides guidance, advice and direction; monitors trainee's progress; grades trainee's performance; maintains documentation related to all training activities Assignment to Narcotics Investigation may include the following additional duties: Investigates the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illegal drugs, drug traffickers and drug trafficking organizations; conducts physical and electronic surveillance; interviews informants; reviews phone records and monitors social media sites; collects evidence; locates and removes/dismantles marijuana and methamphetamine laboratories; conducts special operations such as interdiction, search warrants, eradication, undercover operations, etc. Documents all investigative information and activities; prepares and maintains detailed case reports and records; reviews/evaluates crime reports; compiles, maintains, and reviews various statistical data; performs research; reviews laws for agencies Coordinates activities and the sharing of information with other local, regional, state and federal law enforcement agencies, such as State Attorney's Office, U.S.

Attorney's Office, New River Regional Drug Task Force, FBI, DEA, ATF, or other agencies Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of drug and gang trends and applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new technologies, equipment, trends, and advances in profession; maintains professional affiliations; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate Assignment to School Resource may include the following additional duties: Assists school administration in the prevention of criminal activities on school grounds; provides security to area schools; maintains high visibility; patrols school hallways, grounds, and parking lots; monitors traffic in and out of school property; responds to calls for assistance; mediates disputes, etc. Assists school administration in the investigation of criminal activities and accidents on school grounds; searches for contraband; interviews students; identifies illegal and prescription drugs; recovers stolen property; obtains arrest and search warrants as needed; maintains related case files and documentation Performs other law enforcement activities; assists in enforcing truancy laws; participates in court activities; provides traffic and crowd control at school functions, etc. Acts as a liaison between school officials and staff, parents and students and the Department; promotes working relationships; answers questions; provides information; makes presentation, etc.

Assignment to Internet Crimes may include the following additional duties: Investigates the manufacture and distribution of child pornography and the sexual exploitation of minors; conducts electronic surveillance; monitors social media sites and chat rooms; identifies suspects; collect evidence; conducts special operations such as obtaining and serving search warrants and subpoenas, undercover operations, etc. Documents all investigative information and activities; prepares and maintains detailed case reports and records; reviews/evaluates crime reports; compiles, maintains, and reviews various statistical data; performs research; reviews laws for application Provides awareness education; makes presentations to community organizations, schools, and the public, etc. Assignment to K-9 may include the following additional duties: Conducts police activities in partnership with canine; performs search and rescue, suspect tracking and apprehension, search and seizure, narcotics detection or other activities; conducts demonstrations for community organizations and events; serves on-call 24-hours a daily; conducts daily routine canine care, including feeding, exercising, equipment maintenance, and veterinary visits; prepares, submits, and maintains all related records and reports Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of canine handling and applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new technologies, equipment, trends, and advances in the professions; maintains professional affiliations; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate Assignment to Crime Prevention may include the following additional duties: Coordinates crime prevention programs and activities, such as Neighborhood Watch, Project Life Saver, security surveys, Crime Prevention Community Program, etc.; attends various events and meetings; makes presentations and provides training; provides advice and guidance regarding security and crime preventions; maintains all related documentation Performs other duties as required Job Responsibilities JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION High school diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Valid Virginia driver's license with the ability to meet and maintain Town insurability requirements Must qualify to operate a firearm Must be 18 years of age May be required to attain and maintain other certifications as related to assignment
