Plant Metallurgist
An innovative, $1B supplier and manufacturer for the automotive and commercial vehicle markets has an immediate opening for a Plant Metallurgist. This position is responsible for directing and performing research, evaluation of the quality and properties of materials, and analysis and testing of products along with any field concerns. The Metallurgist establishes and maintains corporate guidelines for testing and metallurgical specifications, as well as maintaining the metallurgical quality standards and systems.
Based at a flagship manufacturing location, the Plant Metallurgist will focus on the metallurgical properties of aluminum-based products and is considered a key member of the Engineering Team. This plant is absolutely booming with business and is positioned well for the future. They’ve invested heavily in automation which is crucial to meet production demand and are also investing in hiring the best & brightest engineering talent!
Responsibilities:
Provide technical support that addresses material concerns in process and product development
Provide timely and accurate material and metallurgical related responses to customers
Analyzes and evaluates the quality and property of metals
Conduct failure analysis and the metallurgical evaluation of aluminum products and incoming materials
Review raw material reports and usage and coordinate new material trials
Perform reviews of material scrap and determine the root cause
Participate in cost reduction programs, proposing new cost reduction ideas
Support engineering initiatives on a day-to-day basis and special project basis
Participate on plant continuous improvement teams
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering required with a preference for a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science or Metallurgy preferred, Master’s degree highly desired
A minimum of 3 years of manufacturing experience with a preference for prior automotive or heavy truck experience
Experience with metallurgical lab equipment (Mechanical Testing, Metallography, SEM)
Knowledge of physical and mechanical metallurgy of aluminum, iron, and steel systems desired
Experience with non-destructive testing (Ultrasonic, Eddy Current) is also desired
Strong analytical skills along with knowledge of manufacturing techniques and metal forming
Proficiency with all Microsoft software applications
Experience with lean manufacturing/continuous improvement processes
Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal along with the ability to work in a team environment
