Overview

This position is located at Martin Army Community Hospital, Fort Benning, GA.

Fort Benning is located in the "Tri-Community" comprised of Columbus, GA; Ft. Benning, GA; and Phenix City, AL. Columbus (Georgia's second-largest city) is home to the 15-mile trail known as the Chattahoochee RiverWalk. The RiverWalk provides an excellent facility to bike, in-line skate, jog, or just take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the scenery. Columbus offers a variety of attractions such as the State Theatre of Georgia, the historic Springer Opera House; the RiverCenter, a performance site for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as well as companies for national Broadway show tours, comedians and entertainers; the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus; the National Infantry Museum, which displays a large collection of military art and artifacts; the Columbus Museum, one of the largest state-of-the-art facilities in the Southeast; and the beautiful Historic District - circa 1850-1870. The stunning Florida gulf shores and Blue Ridge Mountains are only a few hours' drive.

Responsibilities

As a (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)Ph ysician you will:

Performs a full range of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation services to designated beneficiaries within the scope of clinical privileges granted by the Commanding Officer using government furnished supplies, facilities, and equipment. Diagnoses and treats musculoskeletal injuries in patients referred to the Sports Medicine Clinics. Diagnoses and treats mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions). Demonstrates ongoing clinical concern for the total health care of the assigned patient population. Demonstrates special emphasis on rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and goal of return to full function and duty status. Identifies and manages preventive and rehabilitative aspects of musculoskeletal injuries.

Documents patient history and physical examination, orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic studies, prescribes medications, and performs patient education using an electronic medical record. Maintains health records in accordance with established policy and prepares reports in compliance with the Privacy Act and HIPAA. Promotes preventive and health maintenance care, stresses positive health behaviors and self-care through education and counseling. Encourages patients to make lifestyle and training changes to improve their health. Refers patients to specialty and subspecialty clinics when necessary. Familiarizes self with the cultural, social, demographic, economic and epidemiological characteristics of the assigned population. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care. Complies with all standards of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

Applies for and maintains a range of "supplemental" Sports Medicine privileges/procedures, including but not limited to: prescription of physical therapy modalities and protocols; local infiltration of corticosteroid and local anesthetic mixtures into joints, bursae, trigger points, tendon sheaths, or perineural tissues; arthrocentesis; management of simple closed fractures, including local hematoma anesthetic blocks; prescription of orthotics, prosthetics and adaptive equipment; initial evaluation of radiographic studies; and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Collaborates and consults with specialists and administrators in other areas of the department, hospital, or civilian medical community. Assists in Quality Assurance/Risk Management activities and peer review functions. Attends medical staff and assigned committee meetings. Documents services provided in accordance with established procedures: for example, narrative summaries, medical boards, fitness for duty evaluations, determination of competency and special evaluations for military members.

Periodically may fill in as Department Head of the Sports Medicine Clinics. As such, is responsible for the quality of care rendered and the documents prepared by three to five providers and the clinic support staff. May be required to give medical lectures at the treatment facility, branch clinics, or local area commands for medical students and other trainees. Participates in education and training programs as required. Participates in directorate, departmental and/or hospital medical staff committee functions as assigned by the Department Head or higher authority.

Provides input on Command and Congressional inquiries, patient QA concerns, etc. Assists in original, innovative research activities leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at recognized medical conferences. Provides clinical oversight and teaching/mentoring services for general medical officers, Sports Medicine fellows, resident physicians, interns, Physician Assistant students, and medical students assigned to or rotating through the Sports Medicine Clinic.

Directs and/or initiates therapeutic or life-saving interventions; performs physical evaluations and takes medical histories to make assessments to identify medical/surgical problems; recognizes medical/surgical emergencies; takes interventional steps to maintain the health and well-being of the patient; performs diagnostic evaluations; prescribes approved medications; develops appropriate treatment regimens; orders diagnostic procedures to make general assessments of medical/surgical patients; writes physician's orders and records information in patients' medical record; writes work/activity restrictions; conducts physical examinations; arranges for follow-up or referral care when appropriate; and interprets and correlates laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

Qualifications

US Citizenship required

Board Certified in at least one of the following: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and/or Emergency Medicine with demonstrated experience, training, and a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

You must have a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S.

Medical Licensing Examination.

Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
