Job description

Job Title : Phlebotomist 3 Job Summary : Collects blood from individuals of all ages, checks quality of specimens and assumes responsibility for the safety of the patient and the quality and integrity of the collection. Organizes the work of the Phlebotomy area. Oversees the operations of the Laboratory Information System as directed. Reports to Manager. Education :

  1. High school diploma or equivalent, with courses to include chemistry and biology. Prefer Certified phlebotomy course completion or two year collegiate program for laboratory assistants or other health care technician.
Work Experience :
  1. Minimum of three years of phlebotomy experience preferably in a hospital or health care setting. Previous experience with Laboratory Information System is required. Must be certified as a phlebotomist or a laboratory assistant by a nationally recognized certifying agency or, in lieu of certification, five years as phlebotomist or laboratory assistant may be accepted.
Skills Abilities :
  1. Must demonstrate ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric) limitations and planned procedures. Problem solving skills in phlebotomy and computer operations are necessary, as well as supervisory and teaching skills. Must be proficient in collection of specimens. Manual dexterity required. Must be friendly and outgoing with all patients or customers.

    1. Job Function :
      1. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Centrifuges blood specimens in test tubes or capillary tubes to separate cellular structures from serum or plasma. Maintains a clean organized collection tray, collecting area, and working area in a sanitary condition. Collects blood specimens from patients of all ages and conditions by use of arterial, capillary or venous collection. Maintains and organizes supplies utilizing inventory system. Logs specimens logged into laboratory Specimen Log Book as required, receives into computer with all correct data, and delivers to the appropriate areas of the lab for testing. Assists other personnel as required. Supervises clerical and computer operations. Assists with care and maintenance of all equipment to include centrifuges and glucose meters. All maintenance is recorded appropriately. Maintains all required records, reports and statistics as directed, including quality control records. Participates in educational programs and in-services. Attends meetings as required. Maintains all reference lab specimens and records. Prepares all specimens for transport to reference labs. Supervises the work of phlebotomists, organizes and prioritizes workload. Acts as Charge Phlebotomist. Maintains current phlebotomy procedures and competency checklists. Provides suitable orientation. Staffs phlebotomy area appropriately. Maintains cost efficiency in all areas of work. Assures compliance with all regulatory agencies in area of work coordinated. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
      Functional Demand :
      1. Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty. Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment. Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
