Job description

OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois (CHOI) and the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) invite applications for a Pediatric Palliative Care physician to provide palliative medicine direction and leadership for CHOI, a hospital-within-a-hospital at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center. This individual will also be the Head of the UICOMP Department of Pediatrics Division of Pediatric Palliative Care.

This physician will provide Palliative Care across the continuum in the inpatient, outpatient, and home settings caring for children and families from perinatal consultations through young adulthood, from diagnosis through management of end of life care with hospice. They will provide clinical and educational expertise within the pediatric supportive care clinical team. They will oversee pediatric supportive care services, providing general oversight and ongoing development of the service. Look forward to joining an academic medical center practice with opportunities to participate in medical student, resident, and Palliative Care fellow training. This physician will participate in overall clinical performance measurement, collaboration and coordination with other physician services, strategic planning and project development in collaboration with stakeholders from CHOI, UICOMP, and the adult Palliative Care services at OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated, quality-oriented physician leader to join a highly respected Children’s Hospital and University program. They will partner with an established Pediatric Palliative Care APN and work closely with expanding Home Health and Hospice Services, including the local OSF HealthCare Hospice Home. The position offers a unique development opportunity to facilitate the growth of a comprehensive Pediatric Palliative Care program in Central Illinois to improve the lives of children and families impacted by complex illness.

  • Must be board certified in pediatrics.
  • Must be board certified or board eligible in hospice and Palliative Care medicine.
  • Management and leadership experience is preferred.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria is one of the regional campuses that make up the nation’s largest public medical school. The Peoria campus is known among students for its strong academic setting, small class sizes, rigorous curriculum, and hands-on clerkships. It includes numerous residency programs, including 30 categorical pediatric residents and 32 combined medicine-pediatrics residents. This, combined with the large patient referral base and exceptional facilities, make it a great opportunity for physicians seeking the ideal combination of teaching and practicing medicine in a research-based university setting.

UICOMP’s main clinical partner is the OSF Healthcare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, the only full-service tertiary hospital for children in downstate Illinois. It is a 144-bed, full-service hospital-within-a-hospital, with more than 120 pediatric specialists in 40+ subspecialties. CHOI has the largest and only Level IV NICU outside of Chicago, and carries designations as both a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and a Pediatric Critical Care Center. Located on the campus of OSF SFMC, it’s the pediatric teaching affiliate of UICOMP, the state’s only major pediatric teaching hospital outside Chicago—and home to a wide variety of pediatric research efforts. The Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center, or JUMP (a collaborative project between UICOMP and OSF HealthCare) provides training to UICOMP residents and medical students, as well as GME level programming in innovative simulated virtual care delivery settings, replicating all areas of patient care. The hospital is also proud to house the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, which brings some of the care and services offered by St. Jude in Memphis to central Illinois.

Chosen four times (most recently in 2013) by the National Civic League as an “All American City,” Peoria, Illinois, has both the eclectic energy and amenities of a major cosmopolitan city and the charm and friendly appeal of small-town America. Peoria’s picturesque waterfront doubles as the backdrop for the city’s live music and entertainment scene, which includes vibrant nightlife and restaurants; professional ballet, symphony and theater companies; an NCAA Division I basketball team, minor league baseball and hockey teams; a world-class zoo and the Peoria Civic Center, which hosts nationally-recognized concerts and Broadway shows. Peoria is home to award-winning schools; affordable, pristine neighborhoods; 9,000 acres of parks; and numerous golf courses, an indoor skating rink, and dozens of miles of biking and walking paths. Peoria is located halfway between Chicago and St. Louis and provides friendly living in a family-oriented community with good school systems, low crime rates, and a reasonable cost of living.
