Operations Manager

Who We Are

Chapter 510 is a made-in-Oakland youth writing, bookmaking & publishing center. Our teaching artists and volunteers work side by side with educators to provide a safe space and supportive community so Black, brown, and queer youth ages 8-19 can bravely write. We want every young person in Oakland to write with confidence and joy.

What You’ll Do

The Operations Manager is a multifaceted role that manages the full-charge bookkeeping, administrative office, facility management, and retail operations for Chapter 510. Reporting to the Executive Director and working with support from Chapter 510’s  finance and HR consultants, this position will oversee two critical revenue-generating operations, the retail bookstore, and facility rentals program.  The Operations Manager will supervise two (2) associate-level direct reports and will play a critical administration and systems support role across the entire organization. Duties include full-charge bookkeeping with AP/AR, month-end close and reconciliation, HR generalist tasks including recruiting and maintaining personnel documents, office management responsibilities and ensuring our bookstore and event rentals provide a positive experience to our customers.  This position requires punctuality, reliability, adaptability, and ability to always maintain professional demeanor, regardless of circumstances.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities You Possess

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant management work experience as an office or Operations Manager in a professional service, nonprofit or retail organization.
  • Certified Bookkeeping Professional (CPB) license from NACPB OR Certified Bookkeeper (CB) designation from AICPB  AND minimum of one (1) year of full-charge bookkeeping experience including A/R, A/P, payroll processing, month-end reconciliation and closing. 
  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience with a track record of successful performance with at least two (2) direct reports.
  • At least one (1) years’ HR generalist-level experience assisting in the implementation of applicable federal/state/local employment law.
  • The ability to adhere strictly to policies and procedures for handling confidential documentation and information. 
  • Knowledge of and working experience with Point-of-Sale systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Google Workspace Suite and Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software experience. 
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Bill.com) to process A/P, A/R.
  • Previous hands-on merchandising experience. 
  • Experience with data management on e-commerce platforms.
  • Ability to collaborate with others in a team environment. 
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and follow-through skills
  • Willingness to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment and having the ability to work unsupervised to complete the job.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills to support and enable sound decision making.
  • Possess a clear background history with no barriers to working with children.
  • Possess current California drivers’ license with an insurable driving record and access to vehicle to perform responsibilities of the position.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably in the education, literacy, or social service organization.
  • Experience managing a facility rental program.
  • Experience with facility maintenance, capital improvements, and emergency business operations planning.
  • Bilingual or multilingual in both English and Spanish.

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily located in an office environment.  Able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

    • Stand, sit, kneel, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions for the duration of 6-8 hour shift.
    • Ability to operate a computer to create and update documents frequently.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.

Compensation & Benefits

We believe in work-life balance and have committed to a 32-hour workweek! This on-site regular full-time exempt position is scheduled to work 32 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays. The annualized salary range for this position is $72,000-$75,000 with an initial 120-day evaluation period with review. Benefits of this position include:

    • 100% employee coverage for medical, dental and vision benefits with a variety of carriers including but not limited to Kaiser, Anthem, Delta and VSP.  
    • Paid time off including 15 paid holidays, summer nap during the first 4 days in and winter nap between Christmas and New Year’s Day
  • Accrual of three (3) weeks of paid vacation and up to 112 hours of paid sick leave annually
