Job Description
Location:
New York, NY
SELF is seeking an experienced nutrition and Fitness Writer with a strong background in science-based digital reporting to help us shape our verticals. This position will be responsible for publishing 3-5 pieces of content per week, including explainers, news, service, and cultural and trend-based commentary. The content will be a mix of quick hits, reported timely stories, deeper reported pieces, and SEO additions or updates.
We're looking for a writer who is excited to craft stories about nutrition, food, and fitness at the intersection of other categories like health, culture, body image, accessibility, and more. You should have a robust background writing about these topics in a complex, nuanced, voicey way; a rich list of qualified experts in these spaces; and a social feed that keeps you tapped into the conversations in those spaces in real time (and an ability to tease out the problematic and culturally appropriative trends in them). Because our content is rigorously supported and backed, you should also have excellent fact-checking skills, scientific literacy, and a deep understanding of what evidence and sourcing are necessary for accurate and balanced coverage. You pay close attention to the conversations happening in media, online, and IRL, and have thoughts and opinions about how to add value, information, compassion, representation, inclusivity, and cultural competence to them.
As a writer, you're comfortable handling multiple stories at once, all at various stages of the writing process (outlining and writing one, scheduling interviews for another, reporting one, working on edits for another). You're comfortable reaching out and conversing with expert sources-and teasing out genuinely helpful service and delightful tips from them-but you also know when you need to take a step back and dig into the research.
SELF is wellness you can trust. Our mission is to help people live healthier lives, whatever that looks like to them. We do that by focusing on four key brand values: inclusivity, accuracy, empathy, and autonomy. And we're looking for people who share that vision when it comes to creating nutrition and fitness content.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Pitch timely stories several days a week and evergreen articles monthly, focusing on nutrition, food, and fitness (and their intersection with other site's other core verticals).
  • Write 3-5 articles per week, a mix of shorter and longer pieces. This breakdown will lean more heavily toward nutrition/food versus fitness.
  • Follow the news and cultural conversations in your beats to pitch and turn around timely stories quickly.
  • Submit copy that is clean and grammatically sound, structured logically, cited/backed up appropriately, and reads in SELF's conversational voice.
  • Rigorously fact-check and edit content before turning it in to the top editor.
  • Seek out interesting, reputable, and diverse experts to help you explain complex fitness and food topics to our audience of beginners and enthusiasts.
  • Work with design, video, and social teams to brainstorm ideas for visuals and social promotion for these stories as needed.
  • Contribute to larger SELF initiatives as needed.
  • Attend industry events and appear in social videos on an as-needed basis.
  • Write or contribute to newsletters as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Requirements:
  • At least 3-4 years of relevant writing experience, specifically reporting on nutrition, food, or wellness topics for a major digital publication.
  • A background in service journalism, ideally as it relates to wellness.
  • Scientific literacy and deep understanding of reporting and sourcing best practices.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and ability to use these organically in your copy.
  • Ability to write and edit clear, clean copy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to pitch story ideas that are timely, shareable, thought-provoking, and as clicky as they are editorially sound-and turn them around quickly and cleanly.
  • Strong understanding of-and experience participating in-the digital nutrition and wellness space.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $67,000-$107,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
