This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted level, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)
Conducts nondestructive examinations, Certified Welding Inspection, video probe inspections, infrared inspections, alloy analysis inspections, and evaluates, analyzes and documents results; and makes specific recommendations related to company materials and equipment. Assumes lead role for testing and recordkeeping of departmental activities including directing work activities of NDE technicians. 
Typical Duties

Adhere to and support all safety and environmental rules, policies and procedures.

Conduct nondestructive examinations to include: high and low frequency ultrasonic, Automated Ultrasonic Inspection, Magnetic Particle, Dye Penetrant, Radiography, Eddy Current, Visual, and visual torque inspections with the purpose of ensuring quality or identifying discontinuities in materials and equipment. (50%)

Select, set up, calibrate, evaluate and maintain nondestructive testing equipment used by the NDE group. (10%)

Conduct video probe inspections to otherwise inaccessible equipment and power plant machinery as required. Make specific follow-up recommendations to correct problems. (5%)

Conduct infrared thermography inspection to overhead and underground distribution, substations, transmission systems, and power plant equipment where applicable. Make specific follow-up recommendations to correct problems. (10%)

Analyze and evaluate all NDE, UT, AUT, video probe, and thermograph information and results. Prepare sketches, drawings and reports on test results. Support the coordination and documentation of pre and post outage reports. Make recommendations to correct problems, enhance the power plant maintenance management process and aid long-term maintenance and budget planning of equipment and components of company equipment. (15%)

Prepare and revise test procedures to comply with codes and regulations. Ensure the company adheres to and meets all codes (ASME, ANSI, ASTM, ASNT, API, etc.) related to company equipment and systems. Keep informed of and evaluate technical developments on nondestructive examination, video probe inspections and infrared inspections. (5%)

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (5%)

NDE Technician

High school diploma; Minimum of two years experience in utility operations or maintenance (power plant experience preferred) or two years experience in the maintenance and operation of distribution and/or transmission facilities or one year of experience in nondestructive examination, or equivalent education and experience.
Must be familiar with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Welding Society (AWS) codes and certified to Level II status (ASNT document SNT-TC-1A) in at least three of the following methods: magnetic partial inspection (MT), dye penetrant inspection (PT), ultrasonic inspection (UT), automated ultrasonic inspection (AUT), eddy current inspection (ET), visual inspection (VT) and thermal infrared camera (TIR).
Experience with operating shear wave NDE equipment and analyzing the results a plus.
Must have demonstrated ability to learn through formal training and on the job training activities.
Knowledge of PC software application, including spreadsheet, word processing, database and presentations.

Sr. NDE Technician

High school diploma or general education degree or certification program or equivalent education and experience. Higher-level degree in a related discipline may substitute for two years of experience.

Must have at least 8 years of experience in NDE analysis techniques applied to industrial environment or utility (power plant preferred), distribution and/or transmission facilities. 

Must be familiar with ASME and AWS codes and certified to Level II status (ASNT document SNT-TC-1A) in at least three of the following methods: MT, PT, UT, AUT, ET, VT, and TIR. Experience with Alloy Analysis inspection equipment helpful.

ASNT NDT Level III certification, AWS CWI certification or equivalent certification will be highly desirable.

Experience with technical writing (acceptance reports, inspection techniques, procedures/specifications, etc.).

Good computer skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Ability to read and interpret written documents such as accounting reports, safety rules, policy manuals and professional periodicals/journals. Ability to write routine reports, business. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence and manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and employees at all levels.

Ability to define obscure and incomplete problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolution, capability of interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Able to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolutions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with abstract and concrete concepts.

A valid California driver's license is required.

Effective oral and written communication skills..

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Requirements for certification as nondestructive examination technician are listed in the American Society of Nondestructive Testing Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A and in the CalEnergy Operating Corporation written practice for the qualification and certification of nondestructive examination personnel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds. It also requires one to be able to climb ladders and steps as high as 60 feet. One must be able to withstand temperatures varying from 400F to 1200F for long periods of time. Oftentimes it is required to enter a confined area and climb to heights and get into difficult to access areas of vessels.

Must have near vision acuity to read a minimum of Jaeger Number 2 or equivalent type and six letters at a distance of not less than 12 inches (30.5 cm) on a standard Jaeger test chart. The ability to perceive an Ortho-Rater minimum of 8 or similar test pattern is also acceptable. Must be capable of distinguishing and differentiating contrast among colors or shades of gray used in the NDE methodology.

At times the employee is required to sit for long periods of time, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The individual is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee will be utilizing all of the sensory perceptions such as touch, taste, feel, hearing and seeing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
