A Day In The Life of an Mill Department Lead
This position reports to the Production Manager and assists in the coordination of making impossible parts for many industries including aerospace, electronics, medical, and agriculture, among others. This position supervises the machinists in their assigned department and collaborates daily with the machinists, production manager, quality control, and support staff. The Production Lead is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of their department. They assign jobs to machinists and monitor and troubleshoot machines in their department. The person in this position also programs, sets-up, and operates machines to make parts. The ideal candidate must be able to work in a team environment and build effective working relationships while encouraging personal development of direct reports.

Job Responsibilities
- Supervising Machinists (in department)
- Assign jobs to machines and machinists
- Ensure machinists are completing their assigned duties
- Check in with each machinist at least twice per day
- Ensure that all machinists stay productive even while waiting on cycle times to complete (e.g. cleaning, assembly, deburring, special projects, etc.)
- Ensure machinists are properly using Whiteboard to prepare for upcoming jobs
- Choose from Material In racks
- Lead by example
- Collaborate with Production Manager
- Attempt to find a solution when problems occur
- Consult with Production Manager when direction or assistance is needed Job Management
- Review target cycle times vs. current cycle times in department
- If target cycle is not being met, work with machinist Production Manager to optimize
- If target cycle time is not attainable, ask Production Manager to report to Operations Manager
- Complete spot checks of completed parts
- Provide Ongoing Training:
- Machining techniques
- Setups
- Quality checks
- Setup sheets
- Maintenance
- Immediately report any maintenance issues to Maintenance
- Work with Maintenance to schedule preventative machine maintenance
- Shop Cleanliness
- Scrap is removed from work area
- Tools that are not in use are put away
- Oil or coolant leaks are reported to Maintenance immediately
- Trash is taken out regularly
- Aisles, doors, fire extinguishers, and electrical panels are not blocked
- Work with HR when needed to address performance and discipline issues
- Monitor and enforce that WMC policies are being followed
- Maintain accountability to performance standards and core values
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Due to ITAR compliance, applicants must be US Citizens
- Ability to lift 70 lbs. and pass a drug-screen and background check
- Experience with precision machining processes
- 3 years operating, setting-up, and programming CNC mills and lathes
- 3 Years CAD/CAM experience (surface and solid modeling preferred)
- Knowledge of:
- G and M codes
- Measuring techniques and best practices
- Tooling types and machining processes
- Ability to adjust programs for optimal speed, reliability, and tool life
- Calculate and adjust tool paths for optimal speeds and feeds
- Troubleshooting machining processes
- A production environment
- Programming in G-Code
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in:
- LEAN Manufacturing or 5S setting
- ISO9001 or AS9100D certified business
- .0005 or smaller tolerances
- High speed machining and micro tooling
- Machining precision parts
- Robotic automation
- 3D profiling on mills
- Live tooling and sub-spindle operations on lathes
- Manual milling, turning, and grinding experience
