Virginia Health Services is looking for a Medical Records Processing Specialist to join our dedicated team! This will be a Full Time position, located in Newport News, VA!

If that sounds like you, we'd like to talk to you about our Medical Records Processing Specialist opportunity or what some would call the Air Traffic Controller of Medical Records. This key position is responsible for tracking, pulling, auditing and sending medical records requests from various sources for all lines of business in VHS.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors incoming requests received through attorneys, insurance companies, and other
  • Tracks and trends medical records requests.
  • Processes medical record requests, appeals, etc. within the assigned time frames.
  • Provide feedback regarding request volume and potential issues.
  • Actively participates and potentially leads process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with facility medical records to include scanning, opening and closing records.
  • Abide by HIPAA guidelines while ensuring the confidentiality of PHI.
  • General office duties.
  • Complies with all established policies and procedures.
  • Promotes and demonstrates positive customer service towards VHS, co-workers, residents and visitors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires working knowledge of applicable industry-based standards.
  • Ability to work independently and with stakeholders across the organization.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and other applications.
  • Ability to work effectively through various software applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience/education in medical record management preferred.
  • Strong computer knowledge required.
  • Must be able to travel to all facilities with VHS on a limited basis.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret information.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, turn, bend, stoop, lift, push, pull, reach, talk, hear, taste and smell.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous materials.
  • Education should include one of the following:
    1. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (active/unrestricted license)
    2. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (RHIA or RHIT)

OTHER SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Hourly (Non-exempt)
  • Four week notice is required for voluntary termination of employment
