Job Description
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.
We exist to provide answers in support of families, victims and community during times of profound need.

Under supervision, selected candidate performs moderately difficult work with latitude for independent judgment. Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:
-Answering telephone calls from customer and other agencies seeking information on requesting autopsies reports and other related records.
-Analyzes and reviews Medical Records for accuracy and quality.
-Logs in requests for ME autopsy reports/complete case files into CMS RRU.
-Processes subpoenas served on OCME for medical examiner's case files.
-Retrieve and return case files to Municipal archives.
-Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Qualification Requirements
1. Completion of a one year course of study in Medical Record technology approved by a recognized accrediting organization; or
2. An associate degree in Medical Record technology from an accredited college
having a program approved by a recognized accrediting organization; or
3. A certificate issued upon successful completion of a correspondence course in Medical Record technology given by a recognized accrediting organization;
or
4. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full-time experience analyzing, coding, and indexing Medical Records as a Medical Record Librarian.
Special Note
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of full-time experience as a Medical Record Librarian.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least two years of full-time experience as a Medical Record Librarian.
