Job description

Please note that for the first six calendar days of this posting, it is only open to ARW represented employees. If there are no successful ARW represented bidders, this posting shall be extended to December 21, 2023, and will be considered open to all other applicants.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Performs duties in the Mechanical Department related to manual labor such as cleaning shops; maintenance pits; and rooms; moving supplies, lawn care, snow and ice removal, and other similar duties requiring moderate physical effort. Performs manual labor work in Anchorage, in a variety of locations.

Examples of Duties:Sweeps, scrubs, paints, washes, shovels and steam cleans shop areas. Moves bulky supplies and materials by hand, hand truck, or forklift and places where directed.
Cleans floors, maintenance pits, benches, and offices.
Collects and removes waste and scrap material from working areas and cleans oil spills.
Occasionally may be required to pick up parts and deliver them to the ordering shop. Operates a forklift and overhead crane to move materials. Cuts grass and removes ice/snow from walkways.
Occasionally drives company vehicles.

Factor 1 - Knowledge
Knowledge of safe work practices and methods and maintenance of equipment and work areas in accordance with practices and procedures prescribed in ARR Manual of Safety Rules and Regulations for General Guidance and Protection of Railroad Personnel. Ability to use/operate tools such as hammer and other small common hand tools, shovels, brooms, brushes, mops, water hoses and simple power equipment such as a power vacuum cleaner or steam cleaner. Ability to read and write to interpret general instructions and work instructions. Mental application required in maintaining alertness and concentrated attention when working in and around work areas/equipment. Ability to use/operate forklifts having a load capacity of up to 10,000 pounds on a generally level and unobstructed loading platform is desired. Loads are usually less than 1500 pounds. Ability to operate overhead crane is desired.
Factor 2 - Responsibilities
Incumbent works under the general supervision of the Shop Foreman who provides day-to-day instructions.
Factor 3 - Physical Effort
Incumbent performs work on hard surfaces (concrete, etc.) and in work areas that require considerable physical exertion requiring incumbent to stand for extended periods of time, crouch, stoop, bend, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. Incumbent frequently lifts, pushes, pulls, or carries materials weighing up to 80 pounds. Incumbent must be physically capable of walking and climbing.
Factor 4 - Work Conditions
Lighting, heating, and ventilation in respective areas are adequate; dust, grease, fluids, cleaning detergents, soiling of clothes and exposure of skin surfaces are prevalent. Some noise and vibrations are present at times, and hazards prevail from slippery surfaces, climbing scaffolds, confined areas, moving equipment, and use of tools. Frequently drives company vehicle in inclement winter weather.

High school diploma or GED required. Must be able to perform general maintenance and janitorial duties. Must be able to walk, climb in/out of confined work areas, and lift, push or pull materials weighing up to 80 pounds. Previous experience operating a forklift preferred. Ability to operate/drive vehicles, i.e., sedans, pickup trucks, etc. required. Must have a valid driver's license.
