Job description

Many of the world's top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community's interaction with water a bit differently-as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. By 2025 we're hiring 2,000 people (like you) to join our team. Grow with us, H2O+U.

At Stantec, we approach every project, whether at the local, regional, or national level, thoughtfully, and execute it with excellence across all project phases. We partner with our clients to design fit-for-purpose solutions that address the communities' unique needs throughout the project's lifecycle. Our experts lead in their fields and guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Stantec is a place where you can apply your passion and collaborate with top talent on work that is impactful to our clients, our communities, and the industry at large.

Your Opportunity

Stantec has an immediate opening for a senior designer to join our team of water professionals delivering consulting services to a range of local and regional clients in the greater San Diego and Irvine area.

As a Senior Designer, you will be part of a team of engineers and designers in the development of water infrastructure projects. • Develop pipeline alignments, pump station layouts, and water treatment facility layouts.
    • Support preparation of contract documents for construction (i.e., engineering drawings, reports, and specifications), and required applications to regulatory agencies.
  • Possess a basic understanding of water infrastructure construction elements and techniques as they relate to design.
  • Coordinate with various design disciplines to identify and resolve potential design conflicts and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Work with other team members, technical leads, and project managers to develop high quality design drawings consistent with Stantec's QA/QC processes and standards.
  • Be knowledgeable of industry standards and manuals (i.e., ASTM, AWWA, ACPA, etc.) as well as client and regulatory agency standards and requirements.
  • Become proficient in the use of Stantec's standard design drawings and CAD/BIM standards and collaborate with other designers and engineers to continually improve these tools and resources.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • A well-developed understanding of design concepts relevant to water infrastructure design that incorporate the following:
    • Civil Design elements associated with process piping systems, linear infrastructure, yard piping, pumping stations, and conveyance systems.
    • Civil site development including grading and mapping.
    • Mechanical design elements pertaining to pumping facilities, treatment facilities and linear infrastructure.
    • Architectural design elements and the ability to coordinate with Project Architects.
    • BIM Management as required for different project and facility types.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to take ownership of task scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Ability to proactively communicate and resolve potential issues with the project team and support the development of solutions using sound judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant discipline software programs that may include AutoCAD Civil3D, Navisworks Manager, 3D Studio Max, DataCAD, Microstation V8i, ProjectWise, Revit MEP, Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, ArcGIS, Photoshop, and Architectural Desktop.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve CAD/BIM issues and share lessons learned within Stantec's design community, including mentoring and training others.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience

  • High school degree or equivalent; associates degree or certificate desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience on relevant projects.

This position is in a typical office environment working with computers at a desk for long periods of time. Remote/virtual work experience desirable; onboarding may occur in a remote environment, depending on local Stantec office conditions.
