SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Team Lead the Machinist/Millwright Mechanic Trainee provides repair and maintenance functions for the Maintenance Department.  Maintenance Machinists and Millwrights repair and maintain process equipment. This includes disassembling/assembling equipment, machining and fabrication of parts, troubleshooting, and overall maintenance of equipment. Repairs and troubleshooting may be done on equipment such as pumps, compressors, fans, valves, blowers, conveyors, gearboxes, and turbines. Fabrication and machining would be accomplished using such machines as lathes, and mills.

 

Desired competencies include: proven mechanical skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.  Ideal candidate must be able to establish priorities under tight deadlines and have a proven track record as a motivated, self-starter who can work on multiple projects and priorities within a fast-paced environment.  Incumbent is expected to have sound knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs. Prior relevant experience as a Machinist/Millwright in the refinery, manufacturing industries are preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Measure dimensions or tolerances, using instruments such as micrometers or vernier calipers.
  2. Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  3. Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  4. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
  5. Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition.
  6. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
  7. Align machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, plumb bobs and laser alignment.
  8. Assemble and install equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
  9. Signal crane operator to lower basic assembly units to bedplate, and align unit to centerline.
  10. Replace defective parts of machine or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts.
  11. Level bedplate and establish centerline, using straightedge, levels, and transit.
  12. Dismantle machines, using hammers, wrenches, crowbars, and other hand tools.
  13. Move machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks
  14. Repair or maintain the operating condition of industrial production or processing machinery or equipment.
  15. Repair or replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.
  16. Disassemble machinery or equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
  17. Observe and test the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions
  18. Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  19. Clean, lubricate, or adjust parts, equipment, or machinery.
  20. Examine parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.
  21. Operate newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
  22. Record parts or materials used and order or requisition new parts or materials as necessary.

 

 

OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Proactively updates and maintains operating standards, emergency procedures and any other documents as needed.
  2.   3. Maintains commitment to a high standard of safety, comply with all safety laws and IES safety policies/rules and report actual and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel to further IES core value of safety.
  4. Travel and work on outer islands as required.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

   Education and Experience
  1. Minimum of 3 years Machinist/Millwright work experience.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of mechanical work experience will be considered (i.e. Auto Mechanic, Aircraft Mechanic, Automotive Machinist, etc.).
  3. Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  4. Must be able to read, write and speak English proficiently.

 

   Skills

  Desirable Skills
  1. Previous Machinist/Millwright Experience in the refinery or manufacturing industry
  2. Experience in a Mechanical discipline:
    • Military Maintenance School
    • Union or Company Apprenticeship
    • State Journey-level Certification

 

    Other Requirements
  1. Pass background check including periodic job-related physical abilities testing as required.
  2. Willingness to commit to The Island Way (IES core values of): Kinaole, Aloha, Lokahi and Hoohana.
  3. This is a safety sensitive position and random drug testing is required.
  4. Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire.
  5. Valid driver's license with clean abstract to operate a motor vehicle in the United States.
  6. Familiarity with machinery and rotating equipment drawings.
  7. Familiarity with basic maintenance practices.
  8. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including: full body coveralls, protective footwear, hard hats, hearing protection, eye protection, etc.
  9. Able to work while wearing a full face respirator or Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
  10. Willing to work overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends.
  11. Willing to work at least 12 consecutive hours as required.
  12. Willing to be on call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies.
  13. Willingness to devote the time as needed to meet packet and task deadlines.
  14. Willingness to maintain or increase skills.

 

 

 

PAY AND BENEFITS:

This is a negotiated union position, and the starting hourly pay rate is $40.01/hour.  The position will start at the Mechanic Trainee 1 (MT1) level and progress through on the job training to the position of Mechanic A level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employment is contingent upon successfully passing an employee reference check, drug test, criminal background check and a five-year motor vehicle history check.  This position may also be required to perform a practical skills based assessment.  This is a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations.
