Living Collections Animal Keeper

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Living Collections Animal Keeper is primarily concerned with providing a high-quality visitor experience through practicing and maintaining high professional standards for the husbandry, exhibition, and educational use of the living collection. This position is responsible for providing daily care to a diverse collection of animals and habitats. The Living Collections Animal Keeper assists in the training of volunteers assigned to the department as well as staff/volunteers wishing to use the living collection in their educational programs and activities. The Living Collections Animal Keeper will develop and present the living collection in programs and interpretational activities on a regular basis. This position will strive to continuously improve the lives of our living collection through welfare assessments, training, and environmental enrichment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide care for a diverse collection of 150+ specimens/colonies including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.
  • Assists in the cleaning and routine maintenance of various support spaces including the Live Animal Care Center, Insect Zoo, Garden Walk, 8 permanent exhibits and when needed 3-8 temporary exhibits.
  • Assists in providing approximately 500 animal handling and use training sessions for staff/volunteers
  • Assists with monitoring 800 animal appearances in the Museum's educational programs and activities.
  • Assists with monitoring public interactions with the living collection in the Garden Walk/Insect Zoo, LACC and exhibits which can range from 100-7,500 (+) people daily.
  • Creates and presents 2+ interactive programs or interpretations weekly.
  • Ability to work in both warm (78-90 degrees F) and humid (60-70%) environments.
  • Provide care to a wide variety of plants, which may include 1-200 individual plants in assigned locations. Monitoring for watering and pests as needed.
  • This position includes weekends and holiday coverage and can vary depending on need and assigned location.


WORK SCHEDULE:

This position is Full-time, 40 hours/week: Sunday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm daily

REPORTS TO:

Manager, Living Collections


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post high school course work, technical degree, associate's degree, business or vocational certificate.
  • 6 months or more years of animal care experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to care for both domestic and non-domestic animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work in an efficient manner without direct supervision.
  • Experience working with the public in a busy setting.


STARTING SALARY:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). $19.00/hour

Staff, interns, and volunteers will be required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. The Museum is not required to provide an accommodation or exemption from the vaccine requirement if doing so would pose a direct threat to others in the workplace or would create an undue hardship for the Museum.
