Job Title: LeadBarista Effective Date: 3/7/2024

Reports to: Café Manager Salary Range: $24.62 per hour

Schedule: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Monday- Friday, Flexible Monday hours, occasional weekends and events)

Status: Regular Temporary Full-Time Part-Time FLSA: Exempt Non-Exempt

The ʔálʔal (home in Lushootseed) Café is more than just another café: Located on occupied Duwamish, we believe in providing healing-centered spaces and cultivating confidence in employment skills. Featuring a decolonized menu, produce sourced from Native/Tribal businesses, and artwork from around Indian country, we strive every day to provide an Indigenous space in Pioneer Square.

Job Summary: Sensitivity to the needs of homeless and Indigenous cultures is required. Baristas make and serve beverages, such as coffee and tea, and foods. The Lead Barista explains menu items to customers, cleans the barista workstation and cafe, and ensures that customers are comfortable and satisfied. In addition, the Lead Baristas leads other staff in the performance of their responsibilities by serving as a resource and example to ensure smooth operation in the café. Further, the Lead Barista will collaborate with the Café Manager in the management and promotion of Café social media accounts.

Goals and objectives are established and evaluated by the Chief Community Development Officer and Café Manager.

Duties/Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Admin Skills:

  1. Assist the Café Manager in the management of social media accounts.
  2. Collaborate with Café Manager with marketing and promotional events.

Soft-Skills:

  1. Represent yourself as an ambassador to Chief Seattle Club at all times.
  2. Demonstrate a passion or interest in traditional foods, food sovereignty, and decolonizing one’s diet.
  3. Ensure that all guests feel welcome by always offering a warm greeting within 3 seconds of entry and friendly + courteous service.
  4. Builds strong working relationships with their team and supervisor, willing to help baristas and contributes to a fun and productive work environment.
  5. Maintain standards in grooming, professional appearance and communications.
  6. Team player in a busy environment.
  7. Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality.
  8. Fill in where needed to ensure guest service standards are met and efficient operations.
  9. Exhibit a servant mentality, always willing to pitch in to create an extraordinary experience for guests and fellow team members!

Technical Skills:

  1. Produce and deliver handcrafted beverages and food, demonstrating Chief Seattle Club’s service standards.
  2. Demonstrate current and working knowledge of drip coffee, cold beverages, espresso bar, and food stations.
  3. Safely handles all hot and cold drinks during drink preparation.
  4. Understands and applies health and safety best practices maintaining clean, safe and ready standards and procedures and helps ensure that all staff follow these practices.
  5. Opens and/or closes area following appropriate checklist, verifies completion with Manager on Duty prior to leaving the area.
  6. Maintains stock levels and follows merchandising, signing and product presentation standards.
  7. Clean, calibrate and perform routine maintenance store’s equipment using the Store Cleanliness and Equipment Maintenance Manual.
  8. Assist in ordering food, beverage, dry and paper goods based budget and needs of the business.
  9. Multitask while maintaining great attention to detail.
  10. Participates in all sales promotions effectively and efficiently.
  11. Continues to learn and educate themselves on café products, sourcing, and artwork.
  12. Recommend the coffeehouse’s products to undecided clientele.
  13. Clean and maintain the store during downtime as needed.
  14. Cash handling and accurately recording customer order information.
  15. Resolve customer complaints quickly and efficiently as they arise.

Other associated duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • 1 year or more working in a specialty coffee retail environment
  • Experience working with Native American population and/or a strong awareness of Native Culture
  • Has or is willing to get WA State food handlers permit before starting work
  • Proven experience with Social Media Platforms (Instagram, Facebook, etc.)
  • Strong technical barista skills in all areas of drink preparation (i.e., brewing, espresso, milk)
  • Familiarity with online collaboration and organization tools MS 365

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand for the majority of the workday. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability squat down to floor level and to reach above the head. Sufficient dexterity to operate equipment and ability to safely handle hot food and drinks. Ability to hear and speak clearly to customers. Ability to work under standard retail lighting.
