  • This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).
  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

One position will be filled at either the Land Survey Technician II or III level.
Hiring Salary Ranges:
Land Survey Technician II: $62,568 - $75,072/annually
Land Survey Technician III
: $65,700 -$78,828/annually

About the Work Unit
The South Program Right-of-Way (ROW) team researches, defines, acquires, and manages real property for the development and maintenance of the State Transportation System. Working in survey provides employees with a flexible work schedule, typically a 40-45 hour work week, the opportunity to do field and office survey work, the potential to become a licensed Professional Land Surveyor and to work on interesting transportation projects that benefit the traveling public.
About the Position
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking to fill a Land Survey Technician position in Greeley. This position works under the guidance of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor and performs field and office work for the research, collection, and organization of data for preparation, drafting, review, checking and approval of Right-of Way (ROW) plans for acquisition of Right-of-Way for transportation projects.
This one position that will be filled at either the Land Survey Technician II or III level, depending upon the candidate's qualifications.
Your duties and responsibilities will be performed under the guidance and supervision of Professional Land Surveyor and include some or all of the duties listed below depending upon the level, II or III:
  • Prepare ROW plans in accordance with the CDOT ROW manual and the MOU with the Colorado State Board of Licensure For Architects Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • Utilize computer aided drafting programs to coordinate geometry programs and other associated software. Design documents based on interpretation of old ROW drawings and the records of both CDOT and the appropriate cities, counties and other public and private agencies.
  • Prepare legal descriptions for parcels of land that will be encumbered by an easement or will need to be acquired in fee for projects. Plot legal descriptions from deeds to check the accuracy of the descriptions.
  • Gather ownership data from CDOT, Federal, County, Municipal and court records. Research record plats, surveys, maps, and legal documents necessary to develop and reconcile property ownership. Determine impacted ownerships, order title work, and examine to ascertain whether documents are missing and which documents affect the ownerships. Identify, review and measure ownership evidence in the field to assist in the location of property lines.
  • Organize, sort and file all ROW plans, plats, maps and title information. Respond to requests for information from internal and external customers.
  • Prepare legal descriptions for the purchase of land in fee simple, permanent easements, utility easements, slope easements, temporary easements, and other needed parcels.
  • Assist the Field Surveyors in the field for control work, field research and data collection for field operations necessary to produce ROW plans.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with opportunity for a flexible schedule.
  • After a training period, you will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work
  • Approximately 90% spent in the office, 10% spent in the field
  • Required to perform field work over variable terrain, in all weather conditions, and in proximity to heavy traffic
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Travel to construction sites, meetings and training required during work hours throughout the Region and Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Weekend, holiday, or night work may be required depending on project
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required to attend trainings and meetings
  • May be required to assist after normal business hours during emergencies that create road closures or project issues
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications
Land Survey Technician II Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED certificate
  • AND at least five (5) years of full-time field and/or office survey work experience, in any combination of the following: drafting engineering survey plans, researching property ownership, conducting engineering field surveys, or other relevant engineering survey work.

Land Survey Technician III Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED certificate
  • AND at least six (6) years of full-time field and/or office survey work experience, in any combination of the following: drafting engineering survey plans, researching property ownership, conducting engineering field surveys, or other relevant engineering survey work.

Substitutions:
  • Satisfactory completion of coursework from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university in engineering, civil engineering technology, drafting, mathematics, surveying, or a field closely related to the Major Job Duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. A copy of an official or unofficial transcript must be submitted to verify this coursework.

Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill be an experienced Land Survey Technician and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Proficiency in the use of current survey equipment, software, and technology;
  • Experience interpreting survey data and technical information;
  • Familiarity in reading and interpreting right-of-way plans and engineering project plans;
  • Knowledgeable about applying survey codes and reviewing data;
  • Knowledgeable about creating right-of-way plan sets using recent CAD programs;
  • Knowledgeable about reviewing plans and using current survey technologies, such as GNSS, CAD, Trimble Business Center, and Trimble survey equipment;
  • Experience with setting up traffic control for field survey work;
  • Familiarity with writing legal descriptions, interpreting deeds, and analyzing boundaries;
  • Familiarity with the CDOT Survey and Right-of-Way manuals;
  • Familiarity/experience with TMOSS data collection conventions;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner;
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made, and commitments;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
