The Land Management Chief serves as a technical expert for a resource area and is responsible for making strategic and technical decisions and recommendations that directly impact the success of one or more of the District’s strategic programs. This position directs Land Management staff whose primary duties are to manage District fee-title lands or monitor less-than-fee lands, ensuring all statutes, rules, Governing Board directives, and the District’s management plan are followed.
Job Duties Include:
- Manage the Land Management Office and staff, providing direction, oversite, administration, mentorship, and employee development within the office.
- This position provides the day-to-day supervision of the other employees in the Office of Land Management of the District. Such supervision includes preparing employee evaluations for the Executive Director’s review and making recommendations to the Executive Director for the hiring, firing, promotion, discipline and salary of such employees. Therefore, this position is considered the human resource assistant manager for this office.
- Considered mission critical and serves in support of the Incident Command Team for Land Management and other District operations.
- Plan and direct management of District lands.
- Recommend site-specific land and resource management practices; ensure effectiveness and efficiency of Land Management operations.
- Develop and implement Land Management policies.
- Oversee and implement statutorily required Land Management activities, including plans and reporting, Land Management Review Team evaluations, etc.
- Oversee Land Management agreements, grants, and contracts.
- Coordinate or lead the development and implementation of natural resource inventories and specialized resource studies; assist and review staff recommendations and related documents for contractual services needed to complete tasks.
- Communicate and coordinate with the public, staff, contractors, cooperating agencies, Governing Board members, elected officials, and District leadership regarding Land Management activities.
- Regularly inspect District properties and Land Management operations to determine if security, abuse, or environmental problems exist.
- Develop and monitor the Land Management Office budget and expenses.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, wildlife management, ecology, natural resources, natural sciences, or a related field. Graduate level degree is preferred and may substitute up to two (2) years’ experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working on similar Land Management or natural resource management projects or a comparable field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience required.
- Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
- Preferred certifications/licenses: Florida Certified Contract Manager (FCCM), Florida Pesticide Applicator License; Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Manager; Master Logger Certification; and UF/IFAS Florida Natural Resources Leadership Institute Diploma.
- Valid drivers’ license.
