Lamprey Technician III-Pacific Lamprey Project
Fisheries Resource Management

Hourly Wage: $18.23/Regular/Full-Time
Location: Toppenish
Incumbent is responsible for a variety of technical tasks relating to fisheries management. Duties include field and research tasks primarily on Pacific Lamprey, such as trapping and transporting adults, sampling juveniles with electro-fishing gear following appropriate protocols, conducting various hatchery tasks (artificial propagation, egg incubation, juvenile rearing, etc.), enumerating and measuring fish of all sizes, recording field and hatchery data, computer data entry of field and hatchery data, conducting intensive stream habitat surveys, snorkeling/spawning/ fish monitoring surveys, tagging and marking adult and juvenile, radio tagging and mobile tracking, managing screw traps, maintaining and repairing field equipment, light construction work, and power boat operations. Able to work independently and unsupervised in the field, lamprey hatcheries, and at the office. Able to conduct basic data analysis and write basic internal and external reports. All field work is done within the Yakama Nation Ceded lands, rivers, streams, and usual and accustomed fishing areas.
Examples of Work Performed:
Duties include limited data tabulation using a TRIMBLE, computer operations, operating, and maintaining electro-fish back-pack and associated equipment, fish lamprey pot-traps, and juvenile rotary screw traps.
Traps and hauls adults; ensures fish are handled pursuant to established guidelines and they're properly maintained during transit.
Tags and marks fish using passive integrated transponders (PIT) tags and cleans and maintains equipment.
As a member of spawning ground survey team, conducts on the grounds visual spawn survey by foot or boat. Records data such as species identification, length, weight, sex, location (e.g., GPS), etc.
Travel to and from work sites in a direct and safe manner. May use a pickup truck, non-motorized boats, and/or walking.
Maintains records on vehicles, equipment repairs and maintenance within office, building/office work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard fisheries principles and procedures assigned.
Knowledge and skill in operating equipment and tools used in fisheries work.
Knowledge of safety guidelines associated with work assignments.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to handle leadership responsibilities as delegated.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain accurate data and write reports.
Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
Ability to perform duties with minimum supervision.
Ability to perform work assignments independently and productively.
Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and physical terrain.
Ability to perform physical labor and hike long distances in the field.
Minimum Requirements:
Requires Two years work experience as a Fish Technician II, OR record of college courses in fisheries science or closely related field AND one-year work experience as a Fish Technician II.
Willingness to work in difficult weather under varying river flow conditions.
Must be hardworking, self-motivated and willing to work cooperatively with others in an unsupervised setting.
Technicians must be in good physical health and have the ability to work long hours under various weather conditions and physical terrain without direct supervision.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
