What You'll Do:

You don't have to know a lot about agriculture, you'll learn that on the job! You just have to have a willingness to learn and a desire to devote your skills to a greater purpose.The Ohio Department of Agriculture is currently seeking candidates for a Laboratory Scientist 1 in the Animal Health Division, Virology Lab. The duties for the Laboratory Scientist 2 position include but are not limited to:

  • Performs basic tests within the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) for Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) (e.g., cell culture, ELISA, AGID:
  • Assists in reading & evaluating culture results utilizing manual techniques or automated microbiology identification system for bacterial identification & susceptibility testing
  • Disposes of all material with appropriate decontamination procedures
  • Receives test specimens, enters specimen information into laboratory information management system
  • Prepares samples for electron &/or fluorescent microscopy
  • Receives & prepares samples for more complicated assays including micro-agglutination tests, hemagglutination-inhibition, virus neutralization, complement-fixation, virus isolation, & PCR/DNA sequencing
  • Maintains laboratory record system (e.g., initial sample identification, log in, transfer of ID through test system, & reporting of results
  • Receives test specimens
  • Participates in the laboratory's biosafety and Quality Management System
  • Tracks & orders supplies
  • Keeps accurate & complete records necessary to complete any test system (e.g., manually tracks or computer generated case accessions/test results/reports on laboratory forms &/or computer system)
  • Orders test kits or reagents
  • Prepares test media & reagents & related duties as needed for any test system
  • Performs quality control, calibration & related materials for testing
  • Performs other duties as assigned

This position shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of the OCSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.  ODA bargaining unit members have selection rights before non-bargaining unit members.  All other applications will only be considered if an internal bargaining unit applicant is not selected for this position.

Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at the lowest rate of the salary range ($21.38).  In most cases successful employees will move up a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year with successful performance.

Completion of associate degree in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science; 12 mos. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file.

 -Or completion of undergraduate core coursework in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science. -Or 30 mos. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
