Job description

The Analytical Solutions Division (ASD) of Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc. currently has an exciting Junior Paint Chemist opening at our Huntsville, AL location.This position will be responsible for following instructions in a coating formulation, dispersing ingredients, conducting research and analysis on various substances (organic or inorganic) to determine chemical properties, adhesion, hardness, and other parameters and to assist in formulation of new R&D coatings. This position requires a well-organized and dedicated individual to follow simple design matrices and complete all activities within required deadlines keeping a detailed laboratory notebook along the way.
Under direct supervision, responsible for conducting less complex chemical studies, experiments on organic and inorganic coatings and materials, analyses, and tests which require technical knowledge and techniques in projects regarding organization research, production, or operation. Utilizes independent judgment within defined parameters to determine an appropriate approach. Research and analysis on various substances (organic or inorganic) to determine chemical properties, adhesion, hardness, etc., and to investigate potential applications to coatings or industry. Conducts experiments, develops solutions to technical problems, and prepares reports to management. May develop technical papers and or presentations for scientific groups or meetings. On a limited basis, applies basic principles, theories, and concepts to job assignments. Work, closely managed, involves limited problem-solving, following standardized practices and procedures. The ideal candidate will also be capable of working with various other functions within the group.Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn new skills are a plus.
Essential Functions:

  • Detail oriented

  • Ability to read/comprehend technical manuals

Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry with 0-2 years of experience OR 6-8 years of experience in lieu of a degree
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a minimum of a SECRET clearance from the US Department of Defense
  • Team player capable of positive team interaction
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time (stand, stoop, bend, crouch, crawl, push and pull for an 8-hour shift)

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in a coatings R&D laboratory
  • Active / current SECRET Clearance from the US Department of Defense
