Competencies

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

Analytical - Synthesizes complex or diverse information and designs workflows and procedures.

Design - Generates creative solutions; Applies design principles.

Problem-Solving - Problem-solving assists with the implementation of new systems and maintenance of existing automation to correct any issues that arise. Combining this skill with creative thinking can help find effective solutions while troubleshooting. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Works well in group problem-solving situations.

Project Management - Develops project plans; Coordinates projects; Communicates changes and progress; Completes projects on time and budget; Manages project team activities.

Technical Skills - Assesses own strengths and weaknesses; Pursues training and development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; Shares expertise with others.

Safety and Security - Observe safety and security procedures; Determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; Use equipment and materials properly.

Innovation - Displays original thinking and creativity; Meets challenges with resourcefulness; Generates suggestions for improving work; Develops innovative approaches and ideas; Presents ideas and information in a manner that gets others' attention.

Leadership skills - When starting a new automation project, automation engineers may manage an engineering team. Leadership skills are necessary to ensure the new or changed systems work efficiently for the client. The automation engineer can lead their team through process requirements, design plans, and implementation. Managing a team well leads to more efficient client outcomes, making this a valuable skill.
