The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for a Heavy Equipment journey level shop mechanic at 1205 West Ave in Alamosa.What You Will Do
Working as a CDOT mechanic will provide you with the opportunity to put your mechanical knowledge and skills to the test. CDOT has a variety of small and large equipment, different makes and models, as well as equipment ranging in age from 0-20+ years of age. You will often have challenging and peculiar issues to diagnose and troubleshoot. The equipment may need to be worked on in the field where it breaks down, or it can be brought back to a small shop. Our shop mechanics coordinate with with the field mechanics to transfer equipment to them if more tools and space are required to complete the repairs.
You will work on equipment such as light/heavy trucks, loaders, skid steers, bulldozers, street sweepers, excavators, road paint trucks, pole cats, motor graders, 15' mower tractors, other specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment as well as smaller equipment such as weed whackers and generators.
You will work on transmissions, brakes, electrical, ignition, fuel, air, steering and suspension, and hydraulic systems as well as computer-controlled sanders, liquid de-icing, and AVL systems such as Zonar.
Our heavy equipment mechanics are responsible for ensuring the readiness and operational safety of the equipment 24 hours/7 days a week in all weather conditions.
Other job activities include:
- Visually inspect equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids
- Use scan tools and diagnostic computers and read error messages and clear codes
- Test drives vehicles
- Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials; prepare work orders and cost materials estimates
- Perform record keeping and documentation on all assigned units
- Review and process equipment notifications and annual and emissions inspections
- Design and fabricate parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations
- Set up and install new equipment

Work Environment:

Minimum Qualifications
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, which includes at least one (1) year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment, with current proficiency at the journey level.
- Heavy Diesel Equipment Examples: tandem axle dump truck, agricultural equipment, tractor-trailers, loaders, skid steer loaders, motor graders, paving machines, and/or 15' mower tractors.
Substitutions:
Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics may be substituted for the required general experience. Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if substituting this education for experience and may be uploaded within your online application.

- Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes or manual transmissions that allows operation within Colorado.
- If you have a non-Colorado Commercial Driver's License, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire.
May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider. (For positions that require a CDL)
Required to be on-call and to perform shift work
Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station.
New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year.

- Use of innovative approaches when performing repairs, with consideration for available resources, budget, time, efficiency, and safety
- Must have knowledge and know-how to use computers for vehicle diagnosing, data input, record keeping and email, and have the ability to quickly learn software.
