Job Title: Head CoachCalendar: Applicable to the SportESP Salary Schedule: StipendHours: VaryLocation: Ben Lomond High School General Purpose The Head Coach position is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to student athletes, assistant coaches and volunteers within the program. The Head Coach will instruct athletes in fundamental skills, mental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.

The Head Coach reports to and works closely with the Athletics Director to determine goals and direction of the program. The Head Coach is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of every student athlete participating in their program for the Ogden School District. The success of athletic/activity programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire school system.

Public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship, good mental health, or our purpose in educational based activities. All head coaches must complete coaching certification requirements as set by the UHSAA and the Ogden School District. Head Coaches must show competency in the following:Proven experience in teaching and modeling character and responsible behavior.Positive, high energy, and committed to the program.Partners well with parents, staff, community leaders, etc.View success not just as winning, but as helping team members to reach goals.Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Always strives to improve knowledge base and skills by attending clinics.Major Areas of Responsibility:Coordinate the training, instruction, conditioning, and selection of athletes at all levels within the program.Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of the overall program.Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.Verifies that all athletes have all forms and obligations cleared through the athletics department before athletes are allowed to practice.Advises the Athletics Director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.Assists the Athletics Director in hiring qualified staff as assistant coaches. Coordinates the activities and responsibilities of assistant coaches.Develops and organizes effective practices for athletes that teach skills and strategies needed to compete in our conference and UHSAA postseason play.Works with the Athletics Director to develop a schedule for practices (early/late every other week) and games during the season.

This includes working and communicating throughout the season to make sure all athletes are aware of practice times and schedules.Demonstrates and generates among your staff and players an attitude of good sportsmanship and fair play.Knows and administers the policies, procedures, and guidelines set forth in our conference and UHSAA policy publications, and to supervise assistant coaches and volunteers in carrying out the same guidelines set forth by Ogden School District and its member schools.Adheres to the start and end dates of the season and rules pertaining to out of season coaching as determined by the UHSAA.Creates a sport handbook and team expectations informing all team members (before the season begins) of team rules, expectations, and letter requirements.Provides for the health, safety, and well-being of team members at practices, games, and transportation to and from games. This includes oversight of the locker room before and after events to make sure the locker room is in order and all athletes have rides home.Promotes a proper relationship with athletes, parents, school staff, and the media, publicizing your team on a regular basis. This includes an effective relationship with your supporting booster club(s) and posting schedules, rosters, and results on district provided digital platforms.Works with the Athletics Director in determining what equipment/uniform needs are for your sport and how these items may be procured.Responsible for monitoring record keeping of the financial account and the appropriate use of such funds.Works with the leadership of the booster club to help facilitate the betterment of the program.Distributes and collects equipment on a timely basis, informing athletes of their responsibility for the use and return of athletic equipment/uniforms.

It is the coach's responsibility to collect all equipment that has been issued.Attends or completes a rules interpretation meeting each year sponsored by the UHSAA and to attend all conference meetings.Orders team transportation through the Athletics Department and communicates information to students, parents, and feeder junior high school when it affects them. Arranges for a postseason gathering and informs the Athletics Department of letter awards/certificates needed.Arranges and runs the summer programs. This includes a summer program for the school athletes, youth athletes, and coordinating summer tournaments or league play as well for our school athletes.Completes a post season report with necessary information as stated by the Athletics Director.Communicates with post-secondary institutions about future opportunities for athletes to continue their careers and to counsel athletes on recruiting.Works with junior high, youth feeder groups and the community to educate, promote and encourage a positive feeder program.Understands the proper administrative line of command and authority and refers all student and parental requests or grievances through the proper channels.

Utilizes the conflict resolution protocol approved by the Athletics Department.Avoids criticizing, admonishing, or arguing with an assistant coach or any staff member within ears or eyes of a player or parent.Provides information to local news media.Insures that athletes are not left unsupervised in practice areas, locker rooms, or weight training areas.Actively recruits at the Junior High School and High School level the students within their boundaries.Maintains a positive image on the school's athletic websites and social media.Keeps the school's athletics website current with rosters, schedules, and score updates.Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletics Director. Education and ExperienceA High School Diploma or equivalent is requiredFive years coaching experience at the Varsity level or playing at the Collegiate or Varsity level is preferredNFHS coaching certificate is preferred
