Job Description
Bemidji State University (BSU) invites applications to join our team as a Grounds & Roads Maintenance Coordinator. BSU's vision is to educate people to lead inspired lives. BSU is located amid the lakes and forests of northern Minnesota and occupies a wooded campus along the shore of Lake Bemidji. The proximity to the lake and the surrounding north woods allows easy access to an assortment of recreation.
The Grounds & Roads Maintenance Coordinator provides work direction and assistance to other grounds personnel in the general care, appearance, maintenance, and repair of grounds, sidewalks, roads, and parking areas and perform other related tasks as required by administrative personnel of Bemidji State University.
Candidates must also possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a driving history background check.
Responsibilities of the Grounds & Roads Maintenance Coordinator include:
- Coordinating, directing, and assisting grounds personnel in the general care of lawns, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, sidewalks, roads, and parking areas so that the campus is maintained in a well-groomed, attractive appearance. Removing all trash and litter from grounds areas and university buildings so that facilities are kept free from debris and the campus presents an attractive appearance. Percent of Time: 40%
- Directing and assisting grounds personnel and student workers in the removal of snow during the winter months so that all roads, parking areas, drives, and sidewalks within the campus perimeter are kept free of ice and snow. Percent of Time: 25%
- Directing and assisting grounds personnel and student workers in the proper preparation, painting, marking, and maintenance of athletic fields so there is only minimum disruption for athletic and recreational programs. Directing and assisting grounds personnel and student workers in the irrigation of all athletic fields and lawns at BSU. Percent of Time: 20%
- Coordinating and assisting grounds personnel and student workers in the sweeping, striping, and repairing of parking areas, entrances, and drives so that deterioration does not become a safety hazard for motorized or pedestrian traffic. Keeping accurate records and making reports of time, materials, and equipment according to requisitions. If equipment malfunctions, reporting to the mechanic shop for repair. Preforming other duties so that operations of the University will continue. Being able to remove snow, operating equipment, assisting with mechanical repairs, and assisting with other duties. Keeping accurate records on the current work order system. Percent of Time: 15%
Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- Thorough knowledge and experience of modern landscape planning principles; grounds keeping and horticultural practices as applied to landscaping of areas surrounding a group of public buildings as well as establishing buffer zones for short and long- term needs; Knowledge and care of a variety of flowers, trees and shrubs; methods of cultivating, pruning, spraying, trimming and sodding that minimize environment harm; materials and tools used in such work and of ordinary plant diseases and pest control.
- Considerable knowledge of methods of minor repair to roads and parking lots and sidewalks and ability to prepare plans for major resurfacing repairs to be conducted by an outside contractor.
- Knowledge of and ability to direct repairs to machinery and equipment, maintain working schedules and inspect materials and working progress.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Degree in Horticulture or Landscape Design.
- Knowledge and experience working with plants native to Northern Minnesota.
- Five (5) or more years' experience of modern landscape planning principles; grounds keeping and horticultural practices surrounding a group of public/commercial facilities.
- Three (3) or more years' experience working with and repairing irrigation equipment and pest management in large commercial facilities.
- Three (3) or more years' experience in snow removal and clean up in large commercial facilities.
- Experience operating a motor vehicle and other work-related equipment in a public setting during inclement weather months.
- Experience working independently, yet ability to work well with others.
- Experience keeping accounts and records pertaining to the work.
- Ability to communicate effectively to various stakeholders.
- Ability to embrace and manage change.
- A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
