FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

FY23 - Biological Sciences Instructor (Anatomy/Physiology)

Full-Time Tenure Track C-Basis

Located on about 426 acres in the west San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) combines state-of-the-art technology and learning with the picturesque beauty of its rolling hills. Founded in 1947, LAPC is a growing two-year public institution with more than 100 disciplines being taught to more than 20,000 students each semester.  The college's emphasis on student success makes it an educational leader statewide with a reputation for innovation and academic excellence; and that enjoys one of the highest transfer performances in Southern California. LAPC is now seeking to expand its outstanding faculty by offering a Human Anatomy and Physiology full-time tenure track position in the Life Science Department starting with the Fall 2023 semester.

 

DEPARTMENT:

The Life Science Department of Los Angeles Pierce College is an active, student-oriented department with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. The department currently consists of eleven (11) full-time faculty in four disciplines [Anatomy & Physiology, Majors & Non-majors Biology, Microbiology, and Marine Biology].

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAPC includes lower division courses. Faculty members at LAPC are expected to foster student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments.  The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours.  Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs.  Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teaching Human Anatomy including lecture and laboratory classes;
  • Teaching Human Physiology including lecture and laboratory classes;
  • Teaching other Life Science courses as needed, such as Introductory Biology or Microbiology;
  • Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs);
  • Participating in conducting and updating the human anatomy cadaver program;
  • Planning, developing, and implementing course curricula as well as updating course materials and course outlines of record;
  • Maintaining regular scheduled office hours for student contact;
  • Developing resources, materials, and strategies including using multimedia technology (Canvas) to teach students in a multicultural environment;
  • Participating in campus committees and departmental activities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in any biological science; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any biological science ANDMaster's degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

         Advanced education beyond the required minimum preferred, research experience, and possession of an excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in human anatomy and physiology;

  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in human anatomy and physiology;
  • Experience teaching human anatomy and human physiology in a community college or other college or university setting;
  • Experience teaching, and willingness to teach, additional courses in the pre-health pathway including introductory biology and microbiology;
  • Demonstrated willingness to accept extracurricular responsibilities within the department and college;
  • Demonstrated success at initiating, executing, and following up on projects, including the ability to set specific learning objectives and measure achieved results;
  • Proven ability to make human anatomy and physiology courses exciting and meaningful to pre-health profession students and to those with disadvantaged backgrounds;
  • Commitment to a career in a student-centered college;
  • Demonstrated willingness to accept department and college-wide collegial responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the community college faculty, staff, and students.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year.  The District provides an excellent retirement and benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
