Yes County Suffolk Street Address 50 Circle Road City Stony Brook State NY Zip Code 11790 Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silvicultureOROne (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests. Preferred Qualifications:• Skill in using maps, GPS and GIS to assist in locating and recording survey sites. Experience creating GIS polygons using ArcGIS products.• Excellent organizational skills.• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact well with the public and provide accurate information about giant hogweed, kudzu, hemlock wooly adelgid, southern pine beetle and other target species to interested persons. Duties Description The selected candidate will be a field technician working with Division of Lands & Forests, Bureau of Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, which has statewide invasive species control programs for target species. This position will be mainly focused on management of Southern pine beetle (SPB) in and around the Long Island Central Pine Barrens, however some work on other projects statewide as needed may occur. Appropriate safety equipment and safety training will be provided.Duties include but are not limited to:• Conducting ground surveys for SPB and related forest phenomena.• Conducting aerial surveys in small aircraft.• Inspecting forestry work conducted by contractors.• Coordinating field activities with key partners.• Leading field crews in SPB suppression by felling infested host trees,• Assisting with prescribed fire.• Providing outreach and technical information to the general public and local partners about SPB, forest health and invasive species management,• Assisting in related research projects.• Operating chainsaws, off road vehicles, and skid steers.This position requires the ability to walk long distances and navigate in all types of terrain using a chainsaw to control invasive species for long hours in hot and cold weather. Will be required to work well independently and in a collaborative setting. Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Required to have or ability to pass Game of Logging Levels 1 & 2 or equivalent. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2024.
