Responsibilities
Reporting to the Superior Finance Manager, you will have a role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the Superior Refinery's Operating Expenses (OPEX) in relation to the financial close process and financial reporting in accordance with Cenovus and SRC Financial Leadership directives, policies, and procedures. A deep understanding of the refinery operating expense GL and cost center structure will be required in addition to "Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) analysis of actual results versus budget/forecast for Capital (CAPEX) and OPEX AFEs and the critical month-end accrual process. Ensuring standardized processes and reporting alignment between actual results and budgets / forecasts along with the timely communication of financial reporting to the BU cost center owners is paramount. Specifically, you will be required to gain deep insight into SRC's cost drivers in order to perform meaningful variance explanations by collaborating with the cost center owners through demonstrating technical accounting and business financial analysis expertise. You will assist in assuring accounting and process controls are in place and operating effectively with respect to financial and management reporting, forecasting and variance/trend analysis. Effectively contribute to business unit initiatives, and function as a focal point to the leadership team and cost center owners on ensuring the accuracy of OPEX financial reporting against budgets and forecasts. The specific responsibilities below are not in any particular order of importance
Deliverables
- Work closely with Cost Center (CC) owners to help them understand their actual and budget/forecasted spend and provide Business Units (BU) with timely and meaningful financial analysis in alignment with operational performance metrics from key operations areas
- Take initiative to become a SAP / Business Intelligence Tool reporting power user and MS Excel intermediate/expert user through focused training and leveraging the SRC Sr Financial Analyst, Lima, and Corporate Finance and Operating resources that have demonstrated expertise and a willingness to help the SRC Finance team
- Prepare and post required month-end journal entries with adequate clear support for approval by the Finance Manager. Of critical importance are the month-end accrual entries that require a consistent methodology by understanding incurred costs versus actual costs in SAP to validate the completeness and accuracy
- In coordination with the Sr. Financial Analysts, maintain a detailed month-end closing and post-close reporting checklist under the direction of the SRC Finance Manager
- Interpret results of SRC business unit OEPX reporting and take lead role to develop qualitative and quantitative variance explanations for discussion based on non-financial metrics and financial measures. Become the "go to" resource for cost center owners in researching invoicing and posted costs.
- Take lead role with improved reporting on key items including but not limited to Open P.O. commitments, AFE status reporting, etc.
- Work with the SRC Business Unit Managers to identify and assist in implementation of corrective actions to close variances with ultimate objective of being out in front of the issues driving variances
- Take role in providing support in the preparation and submission of Operating cost and SG&A budgets across the SRC BU in support of the 5 year long range plan (LRP). Key areas of Energy / Electricity, Maintenance, Labour, Controllable versus Non-Controllable expenses.
- Work with Finance Manager to identify impact of corporate initiatives on business unit finance and reporting (Examples: Controllable / Non-Controllable and Fixed/Variable Cost Analysis)
- Respond to ad hoc requests and participate in ad hoc projects as required
- May be called upon to be considered as the back-up for the Yield Accounting position

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Associate Degree with equivalent work experience- Required; with a specialization in Business, Finance, Economics, or Engineering - Preferred
- 5 - 7 years of financial analysis experience; Finance background - Required
- 3 years of Refinery experience or similar - Preferred
- Demonstrate awareness of Solomon survey, refinery benchmarking and operational performance indicators - Preferred
- Ability to provide guidance in all financial areas including reporting and planning - Preferred
- Ability to interact with all levels of management in a professional manner - Preferred
- Strong analytical, financial control, reporting skills; Able to interpret and communicate financial information with clarity - Required
- Good understanding of how Finance processes and systems operate - Preferred
- Understanding of system controls, financial controls and risk assessment - Preferred
- Advanced Excel skills - Required
- Power BI / Power Pivot / Business Intelligence Tools and PowerPoint experience - Strongly Preferred
- Strong impact, interpersonal, networking and communication skills and able to make a significant contribution to local management team - Preferred
