Flexible schedule with up to 19 authorized hours per week, March 2024 through December 2024, with the possibility of extension. We expect this position to be working 19 hours across a minimum of three days a week during City Hall business hours.

The City of Shoreline is looking for a talented and creative future leader who wants to explore sustainability in local government. As the Sustainability Specialist - Extra Help, you'll help implement several key programs from the City's 2022 Climate Action Plan. Under the direction of the Environmental Services Program Manager, you'll collaborate with others to create and put into action programs that reduce waste and support electrifying homes and buildings in Shoreline.

It's what makes the City of Shoreline an exciting place to live, work, and play.The Sustainability Specialist will assist with solid waste programming, including supporting the administration of the City's solid waste contract and implementation of local solid waste grant activities. The Specialist will also support the research and implementation of building and energy programs in Shoreline. The Specialist will be hosted in the Environmental Sustainability Team and they will report to the Environmental Sustainability Program Manager.
Examples of work performed by the Sustainability Specialist includes:
  • Supporting the administration of the City's solid waste contract, including responding to customer service requests
  • Assist with solid waste programming, including supporting zero waste initiatives in Shoreline
  • Assist with developing and implementing building electrification and energy efficiency programs
  • Conduct research and analysis of building energy policies and programs
  • Plan, coordinate and attend meetings with internal and external stakeholders
  • Respond to program inquiries/requests and resolve all issues within assigned scope of responsibility in a timely manner
  • Develop community education materials for print, web, and social media
  • Assist with community engagement for specific programs. This includes attending or supporting events either in person or online.
Track and report budget and performance metrics for assigned program(s)Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques of customer service.
Project management techniques and methods.
Principles and practices of community engagement, education, and behavior change.
Principles of business letter writing and report preparation.
Methods and techniques of research.
Basic budgeting and mathematical principles.
Basic community engagement principles and practices.
Ability to:

Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, both orally and in writing, using tact, patience and courtesy.
Engage and communicate successfully with a wide range of audiences.

Research and gather information.
Plan, organize, prioritize and schedule work assignments to meet deadlines.
Gather, assemble, and analyze data.
Prepare clear analytical reports.
Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and SharePoint.
Manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
Work closely and effectively with contractors and City staff.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the desirable knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One or more years of related experience in solid waste/recycling administration, program administration, sustainability-related public outreach, or customer service.
Training: Equivalent to two years college level courses in public policy, urban planning, ecology, environmental science, education, business, water resources or related fields.Environmental Conditions:
Office environment with occasional travel from site to site.Employment Type: Extra Help Ongoing (less than 20 hours per week)
