This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).


New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

What You Will Do
Working as a CDOT mechanic will provide you with the opportunity to put your mechanical knowledge and skills to the test. CDOT has a variety of small and large equipment, different makes and models, as well as equipment ranging in age from 0-20+ years of age. You will often have challenging and peculiar issues to diagnose and troubleshoot. The equipment may need to be worked on in the field where it breaks down, or it can be brought back to a small shop. Our shop mechanics coordinate with with the field mechanics to transfer equipment to them if more tools and space are required to complete the repairs. Our heavy Equipment Mechanics are responsible for ensuring the readiness and operational safety of the equipment 24 hours/7 days a week in all weather conditions.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Repair or replace metal and fiberglass parts on vehicles and equipment using electric or air sanders, body hammers, body dollies, gas welders, electric welders (arc, mig), oxy/propylene torch, plasma cutter, hydraulic jacks and porta power.
  • Repairs are made using body fillers, fiberglass mat, cloth, resin, and other specialized plastics as technology changes on a constant basis.
  • Repair or replace inner mechanisms such as door latches, hinge pins, locks, hood and trunk latches and window regulators.
  • Re-aligning vehicle parts that are out of adjustment caused by normal wear and tear or as a result of an accident. Some examples of work performed by this position are; using a plasma cutter to remove side pockets on dump beds and welding in replacement parts, cutting out rusted parts of equipment and welding in new metal patches and blending the repair with the existing metal, removing cab shields and fabricating replacement cab shields.
  • This position would also perform some repairs associated with accidents such as removing damaged parts and replacing with new parts or fabricating replacement parts.
  • Repairs that would be associated with this position are; engine overhauls, transmission replacements, or overhauls, structural welding repairs such as truck frames, and hitch mounting frames.
  • Safely and proficiently drive and operate a variety of equipment necessary to achieve the objectives in the patrol work plan.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as tandem trucks, loader, backhoe, motor grader, sweepers, etc. to effectively support the skilled labor during maintenance activities.
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. Complete pre- and post-trip inspections, via paper and electronically. Perform and assist in equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Learn to operate and maneuver new pieces/types of equipment and related technology systems.
  • Maneuver equipment safely in and out of hard to access locations and areas that have buildings, guard rail, slopes, trees, or hidden hazards.
  • Operate technology systems in the equipment to help with operational decision-making, inspections, and maintenance. Example systems include Truck and Equipment Controller Systems, Maintenance Decision Support Systems (MDSS), electronic fleet management systems, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System, etc.
  • Develop proficiency in operations in three key areas: equipment maintenance (pre/post trips, operators manual, proper servicing and cleaning), safety and environmental awareness (safe operations, situational awareness, environmental impact awareness, and equipment specific operating hazards), and effective operations (accomplishing specific tasks under field conditions).
  • Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses.
  • Assist with snowplowing during the winter months;
  • Work with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • 4-day work schedule during summer months (May - October) Monday - Thursday 6:30 AM to 5 PM
  • During winter months (November - April) work schedule is Monday - Friday 8 AM to 4:30 PM
  • May have to work 4am-4pm or 4pm-4am for snow shifts

Work Environment:
  • Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30, but may be subject to change at any time.
  • May be required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
  • Some on-call time is required
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency
  • Required to lift up to 70 lbs
  • Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions
  • Frequent travel during work day to perform field repairs, as well as to attend trainings and meetings
  • May be required to travel to remote locations for equipment repair.
  • May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold
  • Exposure to loud noises
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
  • May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and equipment lubrication and cooling fluids
  • Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
  • Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
  • Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 9-12,000 feet altitude
  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
  • New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Golden. Veteran CDOT employees are required to attend maintenance training one week out of each year at Camp George West in Golden.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair.
(Heavy Diesel Equipment Examples: tandem axle dump truck, agricultural equipment, tractor-trailers, loaders, skid steer loaders, motor graders, paving machines, and/or 15' mower tractors.)
AND
  • Must have a current, valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Type A or B with no restrictions on air brakes.
Substitution: Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel Equipment Mechanics or heavy Equipment Mechanics may be substituted for the required general experience. Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if substituting this education for experience and must be uploaded within your online application.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must have a current, valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Type A or B with no restrictions on air brakes.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
  • May have to work 4am-4pm or 4pm-4am for snow shifts.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
  • New employees are required to take two weeks of maintenance training, while veteran CDOT employees are required to take one week of training each year. This training is completed via computer.
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
Stronger candidates will be those that demonstrate depth and breadth of skill and ability, through a combination of professional experience and formal training, to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties as listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Commercial Driver's License Class A with no restriction on air brakes;
  • Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy duty diesel vehicles and equipment, up to 10 tons is highly desirable;
  • Extensive experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations;
  • Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation and A/C is preferred;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Effective oral communication and customer service skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Strong reasoning, analytic thinking, troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
  • Use of innovative approaches when performing repairs, with consideration for available resources, budget, time, efficiency, and safety;
  • Flexibility in adapting to changing circumstances;
  • Strong commitment to safety;
  • Strong positive and can-do attitude;
  • Self-starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks;
  • Conscientious, organized, and reliable in maintaining the shop and completing assigned duties;

  • Ability to adapt to changes in work assignments and environments;
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;
  • Must have knowledge and know-how to use computers for vehicle diagnosing, data input, record keeping and email, and have the ability to quickly learn software.
