The Enterprise Data Architect will be strategically responsible for developing and maintaining a holistic understanding of Mayer Brown's need and use of our enterprise data. The Enterprise Data Architect will play a leadership role in defining a strategy and approach for the creation of the firm's enterprise data architecture and systems. This will include the design, modeling, implementation and ongoing support of one or more centralized data marts/lakes/repositories. Will be responsible for the logical and physical modeling of other relational databases to store and organize Mayer Brown transactional data, creating conceptual and physical strategies for data acquisition, integration and analysis, and working closely with other IT teams and Architects to integrate new systems and technologies into the Firm's systems and data architecture.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:
  • Designs the logical and physical data models for relational databases to support business enterprise applications and according to project requirements for data acquisition and security as well as customer-defined deliverables
  • Collaborates with internal and external personnel, including system architects, software developers, database administrators, project managers, business analysts and subject matter experts to determine project requirements and capabilities, and strategize development and implementation timelines
  • Designs, supports and enhances enterprise data marts/lakes/repositories for secure and effective access to firm data for analysis and reporting purposes
  • Develops and maintains an inventory of firm data sources
  • Develops and maintains an enterprise data dictionary, mapping the system of record for key data points and for all data points accessible within the firm's enterprise data marts/lakes/repositories.
  • Develops architectural strategies for data modeling, design and implementation to meet stated requirements for metadata management, operational data stores and Extract Transform Load environments
  • Works with our Information Security and Risk Management teams to ensure that our data solutions are secure, including architecting and implementing the effective use of data encryption, data tagging, data loss prevention and other data security technologies
  • Creates and tests logical and physical data models for a variety of business data, applications, database structures and metadata tables to meet operational goals for performance and efficiency
  • Supports database administrators, network designers and IT personnel to create effective and secure methods for data backup and recovery
  • Reviews existing data architectures to determine overall effectiveness and compliance with original objectives, develop comprehensive strategies for improving or replacing underperforming areas and present these plans to managers and executives
  • Researches new technologies, data modeling methods and information management systems to determine which ones should be incorporated into company data architectures, and develop implementation timelines and milestones


Qualifications

Education/Training/Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in data architecture, information management or similar field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the functions of the job
  • Microsoft Data Architecture and Data Engineering certifications are a plus. Examples include:
    • Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect
    • Microsoft Azure Data Engineer
    • Microsoft Azure Data Scientist


Skills & Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Enterprise Data Architect or in a similar role (required)
  • Experience working with enterprise data warehouses, data marts, data lakes and/or data lakehouses, including the management of the data residing within them (required)
  • Extensive experience with Enterprise Relational Database Technologies, including but not limited to:
    • Microsoft SQL Server (on-premises)
    • Azure SQL (cloud)
  • Extensive experience with Enterprise Data Management Technologies, including but not limited to:
    • Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
    • Azure Data Factory
    • Power Query
  • Experience with Enterprise Data Warehousing Technologies, including but not limited to:
    • Azure SQL Data Warehouse / Azure Dedicated Pools
    • Azure Data Lake
  • Experience with Enterprise Data Analytics Technologies, including but not limited to:
    • Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Service
    • Azure Analysis Service
    • Azure Synapse Analytics
    • Azure HDInsight
  • Proficient with Enterprise Database Modeling tools (Erwin, ER/Studio, etc.)
  • Experienced in the use and architecture of Enterprise Business Intelligence and Analysis technologies (Power BI, Tableau, SSRS, SSAS, etc.)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate effectively and in a professional manner with all levels of the Firm and outside vendors
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to investigate and assess complex systems to propose technical solutions
  • Strong organization and time management skills, priority-setting, and troubleshooting, especially when responding to unanticipated business requirements
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment and effectively support the demanding needs of the Firm
  • Comfortable working both independently and within a team setting
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines with shifting priorities
  • Must be a self-starter with a high level of initiative
  • Strong customer service skills, able to anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects
  • Maintains confidentiality and exercises discretion
  • Willing to challenge the status quo


Physical Requirements:
  • May require occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs
  • May require travel to other offices as needed
