The Advanced Technologies department within ThermoFisher MSD is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to help build the next generation of technologies and instrumentation that delight our customers. The successful candidate will join an exceptional team of scientific and engineering professionals responsible for novel solutions and workflows. This position will focus on solving sample preparation challenges in cryo electron microscopy. 

Location/Division: Hillsboro, OR and Eindhoven, Netherlands - Materials and Structural Analysis Division

How you will make an impact:

  • Provide assistance to hardware development team of highly customized, multi-million-dollar microscopes and modules with sub-nanometer resolution. 

  • Partner with scientists and engineers to craft, develop, prototype and transfer proof-of-principle (PoP) technologies to R&D to add to new microscopy products.

  • Develop instruments from a theoretical phase though bench testing and early customer adoption. 

  • Develop and review engineering requirements and specifications.

  • Review concept, layout for analysis and testing.

  • Design, procure, and test prototype systems.

  • Mentor and delegate to designated design partners and contractors as appropriate. 

  • Travel to conferences, customers or other ThermoFisher sites up to 20% including international. 

  • Demonstrate written, verbal and presentation skills to report results out to multiple levels of business leadership and provide recommendations for further action.

  • Excellent communication and networking skills internally and externally. 

How you will get here:

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Mechanical Design, systems engineering, or in lieu of degree experience required.

Experience 

  • 4+ years of experience with precision engineering, formal problem-solving techniques, controlling degrees of freedom, error budgeting, sensor selection, design for manufacturability, motion systems, machine vision, vacuum systems, high voltage, optical and opto-mechanical systems, and/or charged particle optics.

  • Possess strong verbal and written communication

  • Work across multiple teams.

  • Ability to balance priorities in parallel with meeting objectives.
