Job description

Job Title:  Elementary English Language Coach (In Anticipation of Future Openings)
Reports to:  Assigned Campus Principal
Dept/School:  Teaching and Learning / Assigned Campus
Work Year:  184 Days
Base Salary:  Teacher Pay Scale + Stipend
 

PRIMARY PURPOSE: 
Assist with closing the English Learner (EL) student achievement gap and accelerate learning for EL students by building content teacher capacity through job-embedded professional learning and implementation of effective language-rich instructional practices. Under the direction of the ESL Coordinator and in conjunction with the campus administrative staff, support and provide job embedded training and coaching in order to improve classroom linguistic instruction that leads to improved EL student achievement. Support others in building their teaching skills, assist in application of new knowledge, and provide ongoing learning and sustainment to increase the overall quality of effective classroom instruction.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:          
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree
Master's degree preferred
Valid Texas teaching certificate (EC-6 certification preferred)
ESL certification
 
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Experience leading professional development
Campus leadership experience
Extensive training in language-rich and sheltered instructional strategies
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
Strong organizational, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of classroom experience
Experience as an elementary teacher preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Serve as the lead language learner through modeling and facilitating English as a Second Language (ESL) learning opportunities for campus staff.
Support the implementation of state standards including the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) through district adopted curricula and use of effective sheltered instructional strategies.
Increase the quality and effectiveness of language-rich classroom instruction through collaborating, co-planning, coaching cycle completion, fostering trusting relationships with staff, and supporting the learning process.
Build sheltered instructional capacity with campus teams through a gradual release model including facilitating conversations during team collaboration to assist with determining language-rich instructional decisions.
Support and communicate campus and District initiatives.
Foster a shared responsibility between campuses and District to know every student by name and need.
Assist district and campus administration in identifying ESL programmatic growth areas for the campus and grade-level teams.
Meet regularly with campus administrators to monitor EL students' progress and develop responsive plans to address student needs.
Partner and plan professional learning with campus instructional coach to improve outcomes for EL students.
Assist teachers in interpreting test data and learning to use it to adjust instruction linguistically.
Exhibit a high level of ethics and confidentiality in regard to student and teacher records and classroom performance.
Collaboratively develop lessons to implement a co-teach model that fulfills the requirements of the District's ESL program.
Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the proficiency levels and needs of EL students.
Develop and implement pull-out lessons for identified EL newcomers.
Conduct assessment of student proficiency levels and use results to plan instructional activities and linguistic accommodations.
Coordinate the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) testing for assigned campus.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings, ESL department meetings, and serve on staff committees as required.
Perform any other related duties as assigned by the ESL Coordinator.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.  Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
