Job Summary

This position provides support to the Respiratory Therapists within the Cardiopulmonary department as well as direct patient care including EKGs, Holter monitors, Event monitors, and Stress testing.

• Prior experience with electrocardiograms

• Preferred prior experience as a medical secretary, office secretary, unit clerk, medical transcriptionist or nurse’s aide

Key Competencies and Skills

• Typing speed of 40-50 wpm (maximum error – five words) and general clerical skills needed including spelling, grammar, formatting and punctuation skills.

Essential Duties

• Primary Job: Performing ECG’s, application and removal of Holter monitors, application of event recorders, covering the pager to provide service to all units requesting an ECG, editing electrocardiograms on the MUSE system.

• Performs all EKG’s in a uniform fashion with proper electrode placement.

• Responds immediately to all EKG pages.

• Accurately maintains all patient records.

• Monitors and evaluates all tracings to determine artifact and dysrhythmia and brings it to the attention of the clinical coordinator or department RN or physician.

• Must know the cardiac drugs that might be used and the location of these drugs in the event of an emergency.

• Teaches the patient what to do during the EKG procedure.

• Cleans and restocks any supplies and equipment used during a testing procedure.

• Utilizes the patient information system for patient data gathering and changes.

• Periodically reviews new outpatients to obtain necessary record information.

• Prepares EKG’s for distribution and charges EKG’s according to department protocol.

• Periodically answers telephone and records messages, directing to appropriate person.

• Performs Holter and Event monitor set-up and removal.

• Performs duties such as copying, report distribution and limited transcription of reports. Transcription expectations of reports will be based on departmental needs.

Reports To

This position is under the general supervision of the Manager of Noninvasive Cardiology. Also receives instruction from the Noninvasive Cardiology Medical Advisors and staff.

There is no supervisory or managerial responsibility with this position, however, it may be necessary to supervise and teach new staff, nursing students, and allied health science students electrocardiogram testing procedures.

Has constant working contact with all ancillary departments, hospital staff, managers, directors, administrative staff, medical offices and general public.
