Job description

**This is an auxiliary job assignment the SSBMI Police Department and for internal SSBMI Police Department applicants only.**
POSITION SUMMARY
The SSBMI Police Department Drone Operator will be an integral part of law enforcement operations, utilizing cutting-edge technology to support and enhance police activities. This role involves the responsible and proficient operation of drones for surveillance, search and rescue missions, crime scene analysis, and crowd monitoring, among other law enforcement activities. The Drone Operator will work in collaboration with officers and command staff to ensure the safe and effective use of drone technology in various law enforcement scenarios.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Drone Operation: Operate drones to support law enforcement activities, adhering to established protocols and legal guidelines. Conduct pre-flight checks, manage flight plans, and effectively control the drone during missions.
  2. Surveillance and Reconnaissance: Perform aerial surveillance for crime prevention, suspect tracking, and situational awareness. Monitor events and assist in locating missing persons or suspects.
  3. Crime Scene Analysis: Use drones to capture detailed imagery and videos of crime scenes for analysis and evidence collection. Coordinate with forensic teams and investigators to support their work.
  4. Search and Rescue Support: Assist in search and rescue operations by utilizing drones for locating missing individuals, providing aerial support in challenging terrains or disaster-stricken areas.
  5. Crowd Monitoring and Event Support: Monitor crowds during events, demonstrations, and public gatherings to ensure public safety. Provide support to officers on the ground with aerial perspectives and real-time information.
  6. Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of drones and related equipment. Perform routine checks, troubleshoot technical issues, and coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs.
  7. Compliance and Documentation: Adhere to legal requirements and departmental policies concerning drone operations. Document flight activities, incidents, and maintain records in accordance with regulatory standards.
  8. Continuous Training: Must log a minimum of 2 hours of flight time every two weeks to maintain the perishable skill.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Minimum of 6 months of employment with SSBMI PD.
  2. Must be 18 or older.
  3. Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  4. Ability to possess a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  1. The ability to be unbiased and fair during the performance of duties and assignments; effectively and courteously work with community members, visitors, and co-workers; always observing situations analytically and objectively.
  2. Must possess knowledge of security and patrolling techniques which will contribute to the safeguard of the Tribal community.
  3. The ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  4. The ability to resolve complaints, make inquiries, correspond with staff, regulatory agencies, employees, and members of the community.
  5. Good communications skills, including written and verbal, composing, editing, and listening.
  6. The ability to perform the essential functions of the position safely and effectively.
  7. Due to the nature of interactions with other employees and the public, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Law Enforcement Background: Previous experience as a police officer is preferred.
  2. Drone Operation Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in operating drones and remote piloting.
  3. FAA Part 107 Certification: Possession of a valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or obtain one within the first 3 months upon being selected as a pilot.
  4. Technical Aptitude: Understanding of drone technology, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  5. Critical Thinking: Ability to make quick and sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
  6. Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication with team members and command staff.
  7. Adaptability: Capacity to adapt to evolving technology and changing operational requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Good physical condition for extended periods of standing, walking, and managing equipment.
  2. Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination necessary for accurate drone control.
  3. Ability to work in varying weather conditions.

DRUG SCREEN
Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.
Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.

Confidentiality is an absolute requirement for this position and is cause for immediate termination if not followed to the highest standard.
NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
