SUMMER 2023 KCPAO CIVIL DIVISION DIVERSITY LEGAL EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
TheCivil Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office (KCPAO) has three legal externship positions available for diverse candidates for the summer of 2023. These summer externship positions will run 10 weeks, with one position reserved for students between their first and second years of law school. Externs must be able to work between 20-40 hours per week. Due to the ability to telecommute this summer, applicants enrolled in Seattle University School of Law's evening program are eligible but must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Purpose
The KCPAO is committed to diversity and an inclusive work environment, and the Civil Division Diversity Externship Program is one significant way to help us advance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The externships are designed to give students a meaningful experience and exposure to our law practice and is an excellent way to become acquainted with the KCPAO, pursue an interest in civil law, and determine whether this is a future career path. The externship positions are unpaid at this time, but the law schools at both Seattle University and the University of Washington offer credit for externship positions.
The Civil Division provides comprehensive legal services to King County government, including all County elected and appointed officials, department heads, and with the managers of numerous county agencies and departments. Serving in its role as an in-house law firm for the County, the Civil Division works closely with its clients in solving a wide range of legal problems by providing legal advice and representing King County and its employees in lawsuits filed in state or federal courts. The Civil Division is comprised of about 65 lawyers organized into seven sections. We are guided by our core values of Integrity, Compassion, Professionalism, and Leadership.

The Civil Division, organized into seven sections, provides comprehensive legal services to King County government, including all County elected and appointed officials, department heads, and with the managers of numerous county agencies and departments. Our attorneys work closely with their clients in solving a wide range of legal problems by providing legal advice and representing King County in lawsuits filed in state or federal courts. The KCPAO also collaborates with client agencies to develop, fund, deliver, manage, and defend public projects, legislation, and initiatives that affect every aspect of civil society.
The externs will do various projects for different sections of the Civil Division. Depending on the needs of the office at the time, externs may conduct legal research and drafting of legal memoranda and briefs; participate in depositions, mediations, court hearings, arbitrations, and trials; and participate in or observe client advising.
Consideration for Future Employment
The summer externs will be evaluated carefully by a supervising attorney. There is no guarantee that an externship will lead to a Rule 9 internship position or a future position with our office.
